				 [OT] Xcom UFO Defense
Game also known as XCOM Enemy Unknown (where the hell did you think I took my nickname ? )

This old game is still one of my favorite. But as I have a monitor which is not able to wistand lower than 640*480 resolution, I was not able to play it any more.

The only possibility was to have it running in windowed mode, but with WinXP it was a long shot.

Well someone made it.

I downloaded a CVS Version of Dosbox (a GNU util), and it worked. I had a running, windowed, playable Version of Xcom UFO Defense with speed problems taken care of. No more moslo/turbo or other PC slowing crap.

Well, just sharing my joy !

And are you willing to give us a link to this nice utility?
There is a window Version for Ufo out there. A friend of mine found it on a cover CD once.

This will give you access to the binary. You have to register, but it is free. Be advised I could not find other CVS Version of DosBox. The standard Version in their main Web site does not allow games to run in protected mode..

There is also a graphic frontend for DosBox, which can be found at http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/downlo...s/doboxfro.zip
I was able to get the NON windows Version of UFO running in windowed mode (hope that makes sense ). But the win port is pure crap.

Well, if you only have the windows Version, Xcom is now abandonware. So you won't have trouble finding it.

/me go back saving the world from hord of ugly aliens

BTW : I was able to get Master of Magic running fine.

What looks like it will be a good followup to XCOM is UFO:Aftermath, which is due out soon I think. Similar gameplay, but with destructable buildings etc, automatic gun turrets, nice graphics. |

Yes I saw that game. Could be good. I am going to lurk in their forum as soon as the game is out. No way I am about to buy anything withing reading about it.
But I agree, it looks promising.

 X:COM: Enemy Unknown rules!
Nothing better then being a secret world organization defending the planet form alien invaders. God I loved that game. Thanks for the hookup on how to get it running under XP, that was my biggest complaint about XP, couldn't run Xcom.

Just checked out the new X-com, looks ok. Could be good, could be bad.

				 Re: [OT] Xcom UFO Defense
Just a precision : when you run a game with Dosbox CVS, adjust the speed of it using CTRL F11 and CTRL F12, until you have :
 1) the game running at a normal speed.
 2) the sound playing ok.

All these are using the DOS Version of XCOM. The windows port just is not running anything correctly.

UFO aftermath is out in the UK. I will follow it closely. And still waiting for starfury. Not even speaking of SE5.

I first X-com game is really good, but the second one, the one at the bottom of the sea, was made so hard that I couldn't finish it even AFTER cheating!

				 Re: [OT] Xcom UFO Defense
Yeah, I still have nightmares about Lobstermen. The Mutons from UFO Defense were bad enough, but just about every alien got a facelift in Terror from the Deep. I can't remember what they were called in TFTD, but the aliens that replaced Crysalids were awful. Not only do they infect your troops, meaning that you have to shoot your own guys, but then *another* alien hatches out of the corpse. And in TFTD they could fly!
Now that I think abuot it, what would be really nice to see in a remake of XCOM would be to model the interception screen in three dimensions instead of two. The UFO's should be able to evade your earlier fighters by climbing above their operational ceiling.

I also enjoyed X-Com apocalypse a lot too. Especially the multi-level campaign on the other side of the dimensional gates.
