I thought you meant they didn't go for the V hexes. As Andy says after the V hexes are taken then the AI goes looking for enemy units to increase their points

Amphibious landing

Bunkers can be succesfully engaged with rifle fire, it creates suppression and occasionaly a round gets through the firing ports. Same with general HE bombardment as well.

True but slugging it out with a bunker at range rather than using smoke and maneuver rarely ends well for the attacker.
