Default Re: Height Maps

NOTE: I used Imgur as a image host for this post -- in some countries, Imgur is "banned" due to "protect the children" laws.

QUESTION----> I see "Coastline mode: OFF" but I have not been able to figure out where the ON/ OFF is or what difference it makes in a generated map
Coastline Mode ON/OFF is toggled through this button.

It's used to improve coastlines.

Let me explain through using a specific section of the English Southern Coastline -- the Isle of Thanet, upon which Ramsgate sits.

51.36026276133782, 1.3974839944363797

This would be a great SPWW2 map for a hypothetical Operation SEALION battle.

Loading it with the default settings for a coastline [elevation offset 0m] and toggling the 🎨 button:

RED areas are Level 0 elevation in our current map; there's a big reason for making Level 0 = Red, because the SPCAMO Extended Map Editor has a special feature that's activated when you push in the Extended Editor the following keys:

SHIFT + "

That's the RIGHT SHIFT key plus the quote mark key.

It asks:

Clear All Level 0 Terrain To Water? Y/N

It makes ALL Level 0 Hexes convert to deep water hexes. It's a great time saver when making coastlines.

But there are issues.

You can see that there's a huge plains area in the lower left of the map which is RED. Mousing over it reveals that the altitude height there is 4m.

Likewise, up near Margate, there's this valley that's red. Mousing over it reveals altitude height there is 2m.

In order to fix this so that we can get accurate coastlines for use with the SPCAMO Extended Map Editor; we push the 🌊 button.

This toggles COASTLINE MODE, where:

If a hex has an elevation value between 0m and 9m, it's automatically promoted to Level 1 (10m).

Hexes that are so "promoted" are highlighted in yellow-orange so that you can distinguish them easily.

Because we're going to have to go back and hand adjust those hexes back to Level 0 (Land) if we so choose (depending on how "accurate" we want our map to be).

AND what is "Tooltip delay" and what does it do ?
Tooltip delay is the amount of time between you placing the cursor over an area of the map and getting information from it (hex location, elevation)

Addendum.......... I selected a map of a peninsula surrounded by water but the map generated has a lot of land that is level zero. Is there a setting to correct that ( like Coastline mode that I cannot find the on/off for ?)

There *may* be something fundamental that I am missing. I am still struggling with some aspects of the map generator that I helped develop !
It's OK, as mentioned earlier in this post -- the SPCAMO Extended Map Editor has two special features to work with VENHOLA type maps:

1.) First, you STRIP MAP in the Extended Map Editor.

2.) Then, you push the following keys:

SHIFT + "

That's the RIGHT SHIFT key plus the quote mark key.

It asks:

Clear All Level 0 Terrain To Water? Y/N

It makes ALL Level 0 Hexes convert to deep water hexes. It's a great time saver when making coastlines.

Here is the text file of the map in question. There are a number of items it seems like I should have control over but cannot see how to do it
Thanks for posting the text file. I'm looking at your location:

57.414269, 18.863525

This is a great example for Coastline Mode.

If we try using it with coastline mode off:

It results in the following map in the SPCAMO map editor after using the SHIFT + " function:

If we turn on COASTLINE mode; and promote all the 1 to 9m elevation areas to 10m; we get:

It results in the following map in the SPCAMO map editor after using the SHIFT + " function:

We still need to do some "cleanup" but the result is significantly improved.

GOT IT ( finally.........)

Guess who completly forgot ..................

" SHIFT + "

That's the RIGHT SHIFT key plus the quote mark key."

I hate having to relearn things I once knew but ** I THINK ** I have it sorted out now ( hopefully........)

I'm betting I'm not the only one who "relearns" this
