A 20 player PBW game? Side bets on the tourny being done by the time SE5 comes out? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

I used to have PayPal but they only give you a limited amount for transactions ($2,000 I believe) and I did $2,000 worth of transactions. After that, it requires a fee to use it. That's when I canceled.

I know Geo took checks for donations so...

I wasn't trying to say people who had donated in the past should be considered for free entry. I was trying to say that if a person is a person who donates from time-to-time, then they (as I would) should look at it as just another donation (that comes with a free entry to a contest).

I certainly don't want people to think I was trying to finagle my way into the tourney based on past donations--those were just free-and-clear donations.

If you want, you can send me a check and I can donate via paypal in your name...

email me if you want to do this, certainly not a problem on my end.

Thanks,

Great Idea, but I might have vacation problems. If all goes as planned I will be climbing the high mountains until August 22nd.

Any chance of postponing the start of one of the games by one week? The tournament won't be the same without the Primitive Hordes making mayhem http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

yes you can pm me for alternate payments. Or email me at seiv (funny a ) tescosamoa (big dot ) com

As for previous payments and on going support of PBW and the tournament fee. I am keeping them seperate. This is a one time shot at raising money for PBW and promotion of SEIV and SEV.

A few of us are paying for prizes out of our pocket and there are 9 copies of the game up for grabs.

SJ and I are running the tourney. With Geo's support and guidence. Natually we will not be playing in the tournament. So no shot at beta test for me.

Primative please send me an email. I have an idea for that... We can dicuss it with Sj and Geo.

Alarikf .... Thats why we have the random prizes to be handed out.... or we would be tossing everything to the machines that rule PBW.... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Is there the standard contest rule in effect about "employees or affiliates" (in this case basically anyone who contributed prizes or helped to build PBW or is helping to develop PBW2) being ineligible to join? I'm thinking I might just give this one a whirl, but then I *am* going to be helping develop PBW2... not to mention (not to toot my own horn or anything)being one of the "in-crowd" who will probably get a beta slot anyway... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

This isn't technically correct Slynky. Once you reach the 2000 limit on Paypal you have to become "verified". Being verified doesn't change the fee schedule at all, but it does require that you give Paypal more personal information about yourself and demonstrate that you have a checking account. I can understand people being hesitant to giving out their personal financial information. Heck, I won't even post my mail address. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif All I will say is that in my experience through PBW and with my personal account I've had no bad experiences with Paypal.

We no longer have the PO Box. It wasn't pulling in enough donations to be worth the cost and hassle.

Mac, I don't have a problem with you giving me your money at Origins. I will get it to Tesco.

well sj and i are not playing. so you have your two admins... And we payed our 20 dollars even http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Ed.... No contest rule like that here. Only suggestion I have is that if some one knows that they are going to beta test... well they toss their prize of the game or beta test slot back into the pile for someone else... and then claim one of the other prizes...

P.S. 'in-crowd' i am not... I get to register for a beta test slot like everyone else when it opens.... 0 for 2 so far on that... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif and i forfit my chance in the tournament to gain a beta slot. Small price to pay to thank Aaron , PBW and the community for the years of enjoyment and friendship.
So I helped out in other ways.... As one can always treat it as it is, an opportunity. Hey I like the game. This time I did not get to test it and help make the game evolve offically. But I can do it with suggestions, and when the game comes out.... Bug people over and over again with my ideas.... \HINT --- SORTABLE REPORTS with includes and excludes ... /Hint

Thats the way I do it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

oooooo. This sounds like fun! Too bad my schedule doesn't allow me into any 48 hour games. For those of us who can't get into a game but want to be spectattors, will there be some sort of venue for us? Perhaps Sticky Posts on this forum with turn updates and reports once things get going? Obviously no one would want sensitive info posted:

(Turn update: Primitive prepares to enter Geo's space with a fleet of 23 destroyers. Geo's 3 colonies in the system look to get glassed)

but some sort of progress, like scoring and player logs of some sort?

(Hey Ruatha, think you could put something in your companion that would allow for posting automaticly http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif )

High tech cost, 1 planet start and a lot of players will make most of these games veeery long. Minimum 100 turns, but my guess is more like 150.

Fun settings, but SE V will probably be at the second patch before this tournament is over http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Fun settings, but SE V will probably be at the second patch before this tournament is over http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Hate to admit it, but I agree with the big P. But if the settings are set in stone, so be it. I'll throw in my hat anyway and see how it goes. (if we wind up beside each other, P, then we'll just have to work together!)

Send me some info, Tesco, on how to get a check for entry.

I guess it depends on what the turn frequency is. If Tesco sets it to 24hrs and is strict on that the game will go fairly quick.

Well, currently, T/A time is listed at 48 hrs. It nothing is changing in the settings...then 48 hrs it will be. 24, IMO, would be pushing it anyway. If time were to change, I think 36 might be better.

At any rate, 48hrs would get us through 100 turns in 6-7 months. So there's a chance we could finish before SeV comes out. At least the first round. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Not that I mind 6-12 month games Geo, but I guess it will be hard to committ to the tournament once SEV is out http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

My suggestions are: 3 Planets and Medium tech cost. Think that would make the games a lot quicker, having a clear winner in 80 turns or so.

Imagine you are in a game to win a copy of SE5 and the game comes out. And people are scarfing it up and talking about how great it is. Could you wait? And if you went ahead and bought a copy and then won, it would render the prize a bit redundant.

Having said that, I haven't even read when it is expected to go into Beta. And Beta should take 3-6 months, shouldn't it?

Anyway, just running my mouth. I'm still in no matter.

If tech costs are high, and everyone will on average have access to five systems, how are they going to afford to research mines without risking being rolled over by someone who researched, say, DUC V? And if they can't, then the mid-game is not going to lock up the way it normally does, is it? So we could be seeing eliminations and a resolution pretty quickly.

Bringing tech costs down to medium might bring mines within reach, and actually slow the game down.

And a low-tech "cavemen in space" brawl might be sort of fun http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Or if people really resent High tech cost, why not ban mines altogether?

Same here as Renegade, I don't think I will be able to play either (and, as you can see, I shouldn't start yet another game when I am currently lagging behind).

If I can however give my two cents, mines are actually very cheap to research even with High tech cost, since it only affects later technology levels while the first one costs the same. So Mines will cost 100,000 research points to get as usual with Construction, which is certainly not too difficult to get.

And if you can get a lot of trade treaties, you may very well have so many research points it isn't even funny (basically, gaining 200,000 research points isn't so uncommon in most games). I guess, however, that the early game will see the destruction of a few Empires and hopes, but it should go back to a normal game later on (ten systems are enough with treaties and good planets, if you can get the said treaties obviously).

Alneyan is right. Researching mines is still very cheap with high tech cost. Sweepers however, become very expensive in such a game as both high level sweeping and large shipsizes won’t be able until much later in the game. The 15 destroyers with level one sweepers needed to sweep 100 mines will be a serious strain on the small economies and make offensive actions virtually impossible for a while.

*Hint* Light Carrier *Hint* http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Even Light Carriers are expensive to maintain with a weak economy, and you would need ten of them to sweep 100 mines. Though it might work if you are using the Light Carriers are beachers.

Damn, this is too cool. Unfortunately, looks like it'll be taking place while I'm at CMU, and I can't risk my first year on something so addictive. Oh well, at least now I have WoW.

...on the other hand, it's only one turn every once in a while, considering it's 20 players and 48 hr limit. I guess I could let the limit take care of me on those rare instances like finals week.

Arrgh, can't decide. Think I'll use July to practice some and get back into PBW.

One thing that I found leads to an interesting (one might say "more pure") dynamic is to not allow fighters, mines, or drones. This is what I did in Zeta...I have no idea how the players feel about it, however. If I could've disallowed satellites in that, I would have done that also...

Of course, for people like me who can't design ships worth beans, such a rule would be tougher, but, hey, it's a thought...

Thanks,

As to the PO box, if Simon is going to take it over, then (perhaps), he should be the one to decide on getting a PO box (for the tourney AND future donations). Just a thought (there goes my big mouth again http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ).

There is no lack of interest. In fact interest is high for this event. I mean who wouldn't want to be in the 1st Tournament of Champions? This is a no brainer, everyone should join and play. The prizes are very good ones for this event and frankly if you don't sign up and play your will be missing out on a great experience.

If you value the $ look at all the time and effort that has gone into setting up this event and the cash value of the prizes. Not to mention a chance at becoming a beta tester for SE V. Hell that alone should be enough to cause a storming of the sign up gates.

So if you have not yet signed up, please do so, you will enjoy it even if you don't place.

Kana <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">LOL, you know, fewer people means that your chances of winning a beta slot are just that much greater. Plus there are several copies of se5 to be given away. (more than your entry fee value there.) Plus three shipsets made by Atrocities, who worked his tail off and produced some of his finest work to date. You modders should be drooling at the thought of having your own custom shipset to use in your mods. There are also some splash screens (aka Desktop Wallpaper) to be had and won. (maybe not worth $20 but at least you won't go home empty handed.) there are also some gift certificates that basically refund your entry fee.

Yes a LOT of work went into the planning of this tournament, and the prizes are nothing to scoff at. But the real value is in the pure 'FUN' that you will have playing a game that we all love.

What we need to do is swarm other gamming forums and make Posts in their forums and spread the word.. "Win a slot in the Space Empires 5 BETA. Join the 'Tournament of Champions' now." etc, etc, etc..

Basically the word about the tournament needs to be spread. This is not the type of thing we want to keep as our own private secret.

As for a five planet start, that is fine but - are you going to ban the Talisman (pleeeaaassseeee - pleading tone!)? On a 3 planet start you can have it by turn 40 with ease (and have LCs, guns, PD, shields, etc). And with mines, missile ships and boarding parties it is possible to defend yourself till then. With 5 planets I guess by turn 30? (haven't tried it yet).

Lets ban the talisman and make the tourney one that tests overall game play, not just can you survive till T-Turn?

It's a "one winner" game and any players in their right mind would NOT allow such a dangerous player to make it to the "Talisman" point. I'd never ally with one. AND, there is no trading, so they are on their own. In other words, expecting racial points to lower Aggression...hehe...can you spell "ripe for the picking"?

You can get it too quickly with that many planets. The no trading helps the Talisman more as that puts everyone in the same boat, where as you might usually get the situation where no non-religious people will trade with the zealot (such as NGC 4 where I had to research ice tech).

And who said you have to lower aggression? I know it is the standard set up but there are other things...

I am not saying that taking the talisman is not risky, especially if you have a good/experienced player nearby. But, I think you can defend long enough to then be un-killable.

Well, we can "discuss" it all night... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ...but looking at it as if it were me:

I would need to research Religious tech AND I'd need to get my Ions up to 3's, ships up to destroyers, I'd need some weapons (DUC 4 at least), and surely I'd need mines (to help stave off the attacks). Let's not forget PDs. Now, in case I'm under attack (as ANY person daring to take the Talisman should be http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif ), I'll need off/def components. At least the 1st level of each. Those are the bare minimums, as I see it. That's a bit of research to take away from my Religious studies. Considering it's 1 person every 5 systems...I've got a neighbor who won't like me because I might be studying Religious stuff that I'll meet in 5 turns (or so).

And I always have to think about this: That any player I meet will already have met someone else...and THIS guy will say to his other "friend", "Hey, I need to do something that will benefit both of us...get rid of this Religious guy before he becomes dangerous. Give me a hand or let's agree to a treaty and borders while I take care of him."

Nope, give me "straight" stuff any day in this kind of game. I won the first round of another tourney (forget the name...but it never continued to the second round) with 4 other people. One of them had the Talisman. I opened up on him with fleets of 20-30 battleships in 4 - 5 different areas at a time. Yes, he hit but I swamped him!

Well, I'm not that great of a player so I guess I'd never chance it. I suppose it could be done by a very good player. Mark or Primitive might be able to pull it off but Rex, Asmala, etc., the really good players will not bother, methinks.

I guess the key issue is *if* the talisman player has people next to them that will attack straight away, and if they can overcome the defences the talisman player can use until the talisman is on line.

In some ways it is a prisoner's dilema to have a talisman next to you. You do need to kill them, problem is is that it will weaken you considerably in the trying. While that will help everyone else in the game you may end up being worse off overall.

P.S I think we are still vaguely on thread but feel free to move this off - maybe to my 'cursed talisman' thread http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

You would be surprised Slynky I guess. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif But the biggest problem with taking the Talisman would be to avoid being declared the Mega Evil Empire because of it (and especially if you have quite a name; I would be adamant in killing a Religious Primitive as soon as possible. *Smirks*).

A single Empire can be repelled without too much trouble before the Talisman goes up I guess (you will need a few ships to get up and running against the Religious One after all, and the research that goes with it), but will the research go quickly enough to allow the Religious player to get this Talisman before major wars occur? And then, will this player be able to gather a fleet with good enough warships before time runs out? Having the Talisman on Destroyers wouldn't be too useful for example, since the Talisman is liable to be destroyed with the first blow.

But I am wandering, and shouldn't give such ideas to a prospective Religious player. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Now more on topic: would something such as sending directly the money via mail be allowed? It doesn't necessarily have to go directly to Geo, but could be sent to someone else in the States (I seem to recall it is legal for the daring there; is my memory faulty once more?). I know it is quite complicated, but I do not currently have access to a way of sending checks in dollars, along with other similar problems.

As to it being a bit OT, since there was a suggestion to exclude it, it is a bit on topic.

Yes, the player who fights to prevent the Religious player from becoming "Talisman'd" will weaken himself. But if he can make good peace with his neighbors while he works on the war (and why shouldn't they agree?), remember, he will gain the property of that war as well while others may not be able to expand due to keeping peace with all their neighbors. And, if those neighbors ARE to expand, then they will be in a war as well http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif .

So, to make a final remark as to the suggestion...I don't care one way or the other if Religious is allowed.

Come on people, I find this pretty amazing. I mean, *I'M* at the top of the list? I'm a newbie to all this - what about all youse fellas been around for a while? Even I'm trying to cut back on all my gaming obligations and I still got in this...show some spirit!

[heh heh just busting all of yer chops]

Although it would be damned funny if I won simply by default - I mean, really, I suck at SE4, tournaments especially...

I hope they can give it to someone else, since that's what I'd probably end up doing in the extremely unlikely event I actually won a beta slot...

That way they get to beta (and eventually get their free copy) and you would be assured to get a copy even if you don't have the time to be on the beta.

Just a thought. Any of you think this sounds reasonable?

By the way, if a beta test is won, what exactly does it entail in terms of time committed and the duties expected of a beta tester?? <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">First, when you enter the Beta you have to sign/agree to a standard NDA that prohibits you from disclosing info about the game to anyone outside the beta.

Second, you need to have time to actually play through the game and make notes of any 'bugs' you find. (A 'bug' can be anything from actual 'error' Messages to sound or graphic 'glitches'. It can also be gameplay issues. When something does not 'feel' right, make a post in the beta forum and let everyone know what you think.)

I'd say that if you can dedicate 1-2 hours/day playing the game and sending bug reports, you would be an average Beta tester. If you want to move up to the 'A-List' of beta testers then put in as many hours as you can.

Basically, it's a commitment to spend time helping with the great bug-hunt. One of the perks is that often you can contribute gameplay ideas directly to the man himself. The first stage of the Beta is 100% bug hunt. "Go on, I dare you to crash my game!" "What, you did? can you tell me what caused the crash? what were you doing when it happened? Did you get an error message? Strange none of the other beta testers can reproduce that error. Have you updatae all your drivers? are you sure? Oh, you have a nVidia graphics card eh? try reverting to an older driver and see if that helps,.. I'm using vxx.xx and it works fine. etc, etc, etc...

I hope this bit of babble helps give you an idea of what being on the beta means.

Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Gryphin, you are starting to worry me. Finding my Posts funny is indeed a sign of impending mental collapse (granted, I may be exaggerating a tad bit again, but you get my meaning).

I shall live up to my reputation, Slynky. I cannot promise that said diatribe will be interesting, but it will be full of digressions and logical shortcuts. You can even expect me to pick a very unlikely Empire, which would normally have nothing to do with science-fiction, and whose only purpose is to add zaniness to the game. Besides... I have a question...
Will we be required to use the same empire in the second round as in the first?
I ask this because the first rounds's going to have more people per game, right? So it would be more conducive to alliances and trading than the second... Or am I mistaken and you're planning to even things out so both rounds have about the same number of players per game?

Ah, but you underestimate my will to make my opinions stand prominently; the names of my planets will remain even a thousand years after their destruction at your hand. Indeed, glassing a planet does not reset its name, which will be more than enough to put the inhabitants of said planets at ease.

And so, in a futur far away from our time, people will still contemplate the "No love lost between Beckham and ourselves either" planet. Seeing this, they will wonder who, or what, were this or these strange beings, and they will acknowledge our time as being the finest hour of our Empire, and... I have donated four custom ship sets to the prize chest. I make no promises, but if you win, and you want your set to be retextured, I might do that for you. If you win, please keep in mind that you will have the option of naming your race and coming up with a back story for them. Also I will work with you in trying to come up with a good race portrait for them.

I would like to post a preview image of each race, but that is up to the game officals. Just know that they do look good. (I think so any ways.)

Good luck to you all, and remember to read The Evil Ruler Handbook. (http://www.astmod.com/erase.htm)

I would like to post a preview image of each race, but that is up to the game officals. Just know that they do look good. (I think so any ways.)

Good luck to you all, and remember to read The Evil Ruler Handbook. So, Atrocities, let me try to understand the ships sets you made to give away:

Custom ship set for winners (or placers). What does this mean exactly? If I understand it, it basically means you develop the race description. Is that right?

Very cool, thanks for adding me to the list =D

Between my big calc exam and work, I should have enough time to do a lot of testing. There are lots of silly but important things I need to know lol. So far I've been reading the dubious strategy guide (link somewhere else) and one other strategy guide... I think I'll die because of my lack of experience, but who knows. I have a couple race ideas in my head, and if I Last to halfway through the game, I'll be happy =D

I would like to get that worked out today.

But work calls so I cannot contact each of you individually.

So Trooper and SE5 send me a PM... And the others read your PM's

This is why I would have preferred a game without any trades, as I have misunderstood the rules. Now, due to the small scale of this galaxy and the MUST of tech and colonist exchange, this game turns into a diplomatic slaughter rather than a strategic/tactical Space Empires game.
Am I really the only one preferring to fight it out, even as a lone wolf, rather than having to write diplomatic emails untill the keyboard is smoking?

I would have preferred it that way as well, Roanon, but considering there was no way to stop it with a game setting, it was something that a person had to do because who wants to be the only one NOT doing it, eh? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Um, there's really nothing here that violates any Shrapnel forum policy so there's no reason to delete anyone's Posts without their consent. Does Roanon or Slynky have any objection to removing these Posts and taking the conversation elsewhere? If not guys go ahead and edit your Posts down and I'll delete them out.

Well, frankly, I do have a little problem with censorship.

First, I don't seen anything wrong with Roanon's comment nor my reply. Just an opinion on a game setting/option.

As to my longer message, I posted it as an explanation of why I was withdrawing from the Tourney. It also explains I will be "gifting" my empire out to all the people I met so far in an equitable fashion. And that means ALL the people I have met so far. It also explains why I won't be in any more multiplayer games. And, frankly (again), I posted it here because not all the people go to the other forum.

So, unless I've broken a forum rule, I'd like it to stay.

Tesco, since autoturns are off right now on the server the Tudran game is 2 days overdue. We are waiting on one Last player but still 2 days is a long time...Could you manually run the turn? Or is there something goin on that we don't know about?

I am in the Osshod game, and I need a replacement player from October 1 to an indefinite period because we are moving. I may be lucky, and might be able to get my dsl provider to hook up the internet in a couple days. I may not. However, I am betting on the worst, and the possibility of being unable to complete my turns for a week or more is quite real.

Also, if you feel that playing a couple days only without any guarantee of playing longer is cheating, I am willing to give up my empire a week early, to guarantee that you will play at least 10 or so turns.

Conditions :

1. You have some sort of instant messaging system, or IRC, or something where we can discuss strategy real time. Maybe a couple sessions will be enough for me to bring you up to speed. If you don't, we can do through e-mail, although not being able to talk in real-time is awkward.

2. You are fairly familiar with SE:V. Maybe a vet. I feel silly for asking for a vet, because I am a newbie. But I think I am doing quite well (I am in 4th or 5th place Last time I checked), and am nearing a critical stage in my plans. If ur not a vet, no sweat. Tell me what point-defense cannons are, tell me whether or not you research missiles, and tell me the most important technologies in the early game, and if you're right you'll be in lol.

3. You will play all your turns and guarantee that you can play for at least two weeks after October 1.

Also, in the end, there is a strong possibility that you will stay on as a consultant to my empire, if you feel attached to it. So message me now and get your hands on an exciting game and an exciting empire!

Which banner, because I did one and someone else did another, so it's a 50/50 chance it's mine. or not.

can you link to where you see the banner? I went to pbw and didn't see a banner. If you mean the pbw race 2 se5 site (forums) the banner used there is not by me.

Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

The banner is mostly green letters, and has 4 starships with a checkered flag background

Yep. I made it during the summer when I went through a little banner-phase. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

We have found a bit of information to be entertaining. It seems that four empires have formed a kill everyone but us alliance. The pladino collective have become an apendage to these four. I would suggest that all who are not part of this alliance form an anti-alliance Alliance. I would be willing to be a part of this alliance until the 4 are destroyed. Next turn I will offer partnerships to all those who are not of the 4. You may do as you will.

this is one of the reasons for all the random prizes... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif This way everyone has a chance to win... As well as the winners http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif ( one from each game... So remember that your not only helping yourself in these situations but also helping someone else )

I assume you're talking about the Atull game. Well, seeing as how I'm one of the empires that is a victim of the 4 empire alliance, I would be willing to join you. Or rather, I would be willing, except that I have lost nearly all of my planets, almost all of my ships, and will declare myself dead within a couple of turns. So no need to propose a partnership to the Tyrellian Imperium http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
