It was down a short while ago when I checked but it came back a minute later. It was fine but now every game I'm in is listed twice, except one game which hasn't started yet. I've actually seen something similar to this when I add an entry to a database which doesn't contain any information yet. Might it be something to do with SQL?

Ed Kolis
June 9th, 2007, 01:55 PM
What is up with the duplicate games? Is it safe to submit a turn?

Randallw
June 9th, 2007, 02:02 PM
I don't know. None of my games actually need submissions anytime soon.

Heh, not SQL. Just my own ten thumbs. I was doing some work on the server and windows explorer has nagging little habit of making copys of files when all you are trying to do is drag them from one place to another. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif I thought I had deleted them all but apparently not. Should be all right now.

Server is up, but it looks like our IP has changed. I will need to get the DNS updated. Hopefully later today. In the mean time yo ucan reach the server directly at http://69.81.87.189

I'll turn auto processing off until we get the DNS updated.

That's why I always right-click-and-drag, which provokes the popup menu that asks "move or copy?"

There again, I have my Win Explorer in XP setup to work just like the Win Explorer in my beloved (and much mourned) Win98SE, which it does not do by default.

I had to take the server down for a bit this afternoon. We are having a bit of a heat wave. Normally having the server out in my garage isn't a problem, but the last few days have been pretty hot and I just added a new hard drive. The combination seems to have pushed it past the point where I can keep the PC cooled off. I'm going to bring it into the house this evening and put it in a spare room. That should do the trick.

Seems to be ok.. but today I am getting Internal Server Error's.

aegisx
July 1st, 2007, 02:37 PM
The errors are gone, but I cannot seem to upload a replacement turn. It errors out. Actually it seems to happen when I try to upload the offline generated turn as a zip.

Now it seems to have crashed again...

geoschmo
July 1st, 2007, 04:01 PM
I was working on the server and took it down, it didn't crash. It's back up now.

I think I saw you trying to upload your turn and it was giving an error on the server that the file size was too large. Were you not getting that as an error in your browser?

aegisx
July 1st, 2007, 04:06 PM
Nope, it just said something about disconnecting (IE/Firefox), no custom error. What is the manual turn upload limit?

geoschmo
July 1st, 2007, 05:01 PM
Are you using firefox? You might try IE to upload your turn. I think the limit is 10MB, but you should get an error.

aegisx
July 1st, 2007, 05:11 PM
I tried both, no luck. So I guess there is no way to get the combat replay up http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

geoschmo
July 1st, 2007, 05:34 PM
Yeah I tested it myself and you are correct. It doesn't give you a specific error, just fails.

I did check though and it's a 10MB limit. You can upload the turn without the combat replay. If anyone needs the combat replay maybe you can send it to them separatly or post it somewhere for them to download.

The PBW server has been flaky since yesterday morning. Before it got into the never-loading state you're seeing now, it was throwing Out Of Memory errors on almost anything you tried to do.

I don't think Geo still has notifications set on this thread. I'll e-mail him a reminder to make sure he knows there's a problem.

In an effort to reduce some of the downtimes, and also to cut some costs, we've switch ISP's for PBW. I made the change yesterday, and so far indications things are working as expected.

The impact to you should be minimal. One thing that is different is the IP address we've had the last few months is no longer valid. The previous ISP was a dynamic IP, but it didn't change very often. The new ISP is also a dynamic IP, but it will change more frequently, perhaps as often as once every 24 horus. We've got things setup with a dynamic DNS provider to keep the pbw.cc updated to the correct IP.

I will be monitoring it for a few days to make sure that it happening as expected. When I switched it yesterday the DNS updated in less than a minute, so that is a positive indicator.

I'm also going to have to take things down in a few minutes to make a couple more changes. Should be back up shortly.

Still getting this error sporadically. I've noted that it is more likely, but not necessarily, going to fail if I use my bookmarked "http://seiv.pbw.cc/graphic/index.jsp" as opposed to the more generic "http://seiv.pbw.cc/". (this also applies to "www.pbw.cc" and "http://www.pbw.cc/graphic/index.jsp")

I have also noted that once I finally manage to connect to the server, and follow the links to get to "http://seiv.pbw.cc/graphic/index.jsp", I can then, in the same browser session only, just use the bookmarked "http://seiv.pbw.cc/graphic/index.jsp" and it will work. If I close out the browser, however, I USUALLY have to try to get the shorter link to work first.

I hope this helps.

There is a username which I believe is yours. It's all lowercase. If you've forgotten your password, yo ucan type the user name and hit the "Get Passwd" button. This will email your password to your PBW email. The Email you have setup on PBW is a Yahoo account, but not the same one you have listed as your email here on Shrapnel. If yo uhave the username right, it will say that the password ahs been emailed. If you don't have the username right it will give you another error.

I hope this helps.

of coarse, as SJ pointed out, it isn't working at all now....

I can't get at PBW either. The old direct DNS address doesn't work, but I didn't expect it to.

I've contacted The Admiral about the domain expiring. If something happens in the mean time you can reach the server at this URL: http://pbw.go.dyndns.org/

Of course you can can use the IP address Fyron posted previously, but that IP is subject to change. The above URL should always be good on the other hand.

I have had to take the server down today. The remnants of Ike are passing through our area today and the power has been going in and out. I should be able to bring it back up in a couple hours, assuming we don't lose power completely.

I've had to take the server down tonight. Having a bit of a temperature issue. I don't think it's a serious problem, it looks like we've just got a fan that has failed. Unfortunately though it may be a couple days before I can get to the store and get a new one.

Bear with me. Sorry for the inconvenience.

"ISP issues" huh? (http://pbw.georgeperley.com)

What happened? Run over your bandwidth limit due to too many SE5 games? ;) Or do they think you are distributing pirated copies of Space Empires games or something? :P

geoschmo

No, it wasn't anything TOS related. It just wouldn't stay up. I could get a couple minutes by resetting the modem, but that was about it. Tech support was telling me my line was good and it must be the modem. Turned out, for once, they were right. :)

Just posted this on the PBW news:

"If you haven't noticed, we had some down time over the weekend related to what we though was an ISP problem. Turned out the issue was our DSL modem was flaking out. Good news is we were able to get one locally and we are back up and running smoothly. Bad news is it took a little bit of cash, about $70 dollars. If anyone feels motivated to send a couple bucks to help offset that, donations as always are welcome.

Thanks again for your support."

We've had some sort of disk failure on the server. The drive which has all the game versions and most of the site data was throwing errors and when I rebooted windows did a disk check and it looks like we lost a large part of the data on that drive. I'm trying to figure out if I can recover it. We are looking at a few days down time I'm guessing at best.

Unfortunately our backup strategy wasn't exactly very well thought out. We are working on a plan to try and recover the data. I hope to have some news in a few days.

Are there problems beyond the loss of game information? Is there hardware that needs to be replaced?

capnq
January 2nd, 2009, 08:11 AM
Is there hardware that needs to be replaced? We don't know yet whether the harddrive itself is still usable.

The current situation is that the failed HD is here in Pittsburgh, where a friend of mine who is an IT professional is going to look at what files are salvagable. I haven't seen her yet to give her the drive, and I don't know how long the recovery process will take.

If she's anything like the hardware guys I know, once she gets it, it won't take long to form an opinion. The reason I asked was because I'd like to make a small donation toward the repair, replacement, etc.

geoschmo
January 3rd, 2009, 02:02 PM
I don't think I'd trust the drive in any case. Once a hard drive starts flaking out, I don't really like to use it unless it's just for unimportant stuff. If it's recoverable, the hardware isn't that expensive to replace.
