Makes me wonder why the Civ line of game products were at least in my eyes allwayslacking vs Alpha Centauri. At least it had semi-decent AI and it was not build deliberately to bust you from common...

I play usually C'tis of various ages and I admit these giants can be slightly stressful to face on early game.

My advice is very limited, it ties to the side that they do rely on cold. If not...
