yeah the bog beasts are quite cheap

only thing which doesn't suit me very much is they are strat move 1 only . so if the front is far away you either use them for defensive purposes or get the summoners first to the front

but as you said gemwise it is one of the better spells you get quite much for your investment
there are no nations with 100% natural poison resistance units or ?
expect pythium serpent cult with masshydras .

The only bad thing about the bog beasts is they seem to retreat quite often. You almost need a mage or two to cast a mass beserk on them.

hm and every undead summon

that makes them very unreliable in lategame i guess

a very good use for them is most likely for an atlantian king of the deep which got luckily the naturepick
he can summon them then on the beachead

I hate losing the riders of my spiders much less once I hit Construction 6 (which I want anyhow for skulls of fire) for this reason:

A Sorceror with a random water and a water bracelet can cast summon bog beasts -- supplemented with a few unroutable vine ogres (sorc with a random nature or a thisle mace) -- which in my opinion are a GREAT bang for your buck, IF you have poison-immune units, and those are cheap vine ogres and....
riderless spiders! Save em all, and make a cheap poison squad! A leader or two with a snake ring can then cast decent poison spells as well with impunity -- spiders and bog beasts rock!
