I've made some progress today. Still a lot to do, but I made a tga version and made a playable map file. Currenty without seas. The finished one will have about 250-275 provinces.

I like NTJedi's idea of having independents named for Forum stalwarts. There's some good potential for humor in that idea.
Map looks very nice. The only criticism I can offer is that some of the coastlines are a bit too smooth to look natural.

I don't know about everyone else, but I would pay money for a map of each era that had fixed starting locations that evolved in each era. (IOW, complete maps.) The game has awesome flavor, and to see it played out on a map would just be awesometastic.
