Vamps were weak back in DomII days - certainly I never had any problems with them. they are weaker now.
the only thing that might be making a vamp-heavy strat viable is quantum's continual lowering of their summoning cost in CBM.

Again, how many units that are midline summons are cool to stick it out against 3 earthquakes? (I'll happily take immortal units in this case, BTW) It's fine if you don't like vamps, everybody's got their own style. Come on though, we're talking about a unit that costs a couple blood slaves and is a level 5 summon. They fly, they have an armor piercing attack, they have darkvision, they regenerate and gain life through their attack, have a decent MR, decent hitpoints. If you're clever you can certainly make them effective in some situations, which is the point of this guide and all you can ask of any unit.

Markatas have pretty high defence so they won't likely be killed by a single earthquake.

15 MR is pretty high considering that the highest MR that counts is 18.

15 MR isn't enough to protect against specialized enemy mages though. But with Antimagic backing it up...

Agreed, but I wouldn't consider 15 low.
0 is none
5 is low
10 is normal
15 is high
18 is very high and max in one way.

15 prot is also high but would we talk about that being good prot or a strength when it comes to effective midgame strategies? I think not.

Remember we're not talking about Thugs or SCs here, we're talking about massed troops. What else are you going to mass that has 15 mr without boosting?
