Yes, that would be a problem. If SE5 doesn't do a better job with the processing speed of the larger games, there will be a practical limit to how big a game can be on PBW. Of course, that's a year or two away. Enough time to upgrade the server hardware I think.

Re: Maximum players?
It is enthralling to envision SE5 with a much higher limit on the number of max systems, players, etc...
Think of what a game would be like with a thousand systems, or fifty empires?
Of course, you'd have to comensurately slow down tech growth and other stuff...and it would take eons to play...but if such a thing were on PBW, it would approach a "massive Online game", no?
intriguing...
thanks,

Re: Maximum players?
Personally I think I'd have difficulty in a game with more then 20 human players. I would like to see a larger number of spots for AI, and "Indiginous" races. Like Neutrals but weaker even. Bascially they'd be little more then a resource for the major empires to conquer and use to populate their colonies.

Re: Maximum players?
You know geo, you are right...
A game with a lot of human player would be very hard to play (and to organize), but would be intersting to have more slots for AI and Neutral empires.
I never play multiplayer (my work schedulle is too irregular and i lost a lot of turns Last time i tried), my objective with a higher number of empires would be to enrich the SP experience...
Well, let's hope SE5 comes with a higher empire limit, meanwhile i will continue to play agains "only" 19 other AI's...

Re: Maximum players?
There are a few GUI elements that would need adjustment for more than 20 players, such as the score graph, the treaty grid, and the little icons that appear in a map sector for each empire present.
