Re: How did you hear about SE4 Gold?
While surfing for a new game I came over this rave review:
http://www.pcgameworld.com/review.php/id/164/
In fact it was so good you could almost suspect the reviewer, a mysterious Scott R Krol, was not totally unbiased
Anyway, thank you Scott. It was all true.

Re: How did you hear about SE4 Gold?
Reading a game magazine while I was addicted to crack and alcohol. I needed a new vice that kept me at home w/o appearing to be addicted. Only problem is after 2 years I'm too addicted and have been seen taking turns at work when I don't have the time to snort a few turns at home. The good news is most of the addiction is transparent to others (my wife still thinks I'm crazy when I spend an hour on a turn that includes clicking the mouse a 1k+ times).

On the Master of Orion 3 forums while waiting for the Super Patch for that game.
Tried the demo, bought it the next day, never looked back.

Re: How did you hear about SE4 Gold?
I was looking for a game to replace Stars! after I realised Stars! Supernova was not going to come out. I came across the game listed in a games catalogue. The sort that just has a single paragraph with the price listed. Decided to give it a go from the description. Glad I did.
