Just get a multi-server IM client, such as Trillian or GAIM, so that you can connect to all of the networks easily and efficiently. No need to ever use the "official" IM clients, really. They all suck about equally.  |

Well, with Trillian at least, you can connect to AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, IRC, Jabber (with plugin), and GroupWise (with plugin). I think there's a few other medium plugins that are being developed by third parties for Trillian.
And the point is, all the "official" clients are bloatware, advertisement-conveying programs, etc. Especially ICQ. The only ICQ Version I liked was 98b, way back in the day, before they started adding all those nonsense features. The newer ones are complete resource hogs.
Plus it makes things more convenient to run one program for all of them.
Anyway... Trillian r0x0rs. w00t.
