also, since this game is set in the space empires universe, is it important to have played the space empire games to understand it?

Nothing to worry about, for two reasons...

1) the Space Empires background (at least in SEIV) is pretty generic - no real need for any prior knowledge other than what will come with the game.

2) We're gonna mod the hell out of this thing anyways, so that Star Trek, Star Wars, and B5 Versions will be out and available here on the Boards before you can say "Metebelius III".
