Some summons do actually have upkeep, I think; not all. Undead generally don't, but I think trolls -- at least Sea Trolls, and probably the others -- do.

Edit: Addendum. The devils you'll get are the basic devils; larger than imps, they fly, stronger than your normal human, they radiate fire and all that, and wield pitchforks. They're not exactly awe-inspiring, but they're nice to have. Luck won't matter, it's a guaranteed summons so long as you have a blood mage entering the site.
