Just to correct Nerfman, the USNs first carrier was the Langley. Then the Lex and Toga were made from battlecruisers. The Ranger was a purpose built carrier, not converted. I think the only US carriers converted from other ships, after the Lex and Toga, were the CVEs and CVLs.
