Seriously though... the official manuals arn't much use at all, and the strategy guide you can download from this site won't help you much at all with the mechanics of the game.

I think it's about time we put together a faq and / or unofficial manual.
Things to be included:
-basics (using the varoius screens and icons)
-building stuff, moving stuff, combat, politics, intel
-specific details (what the different facilities and components do)
-that excellent decription posted a while back on the way armour works
-How to mod files
-How the game interprets mod files.
-loads of other stuff I can't be arsed to list.

I'll volunteer for contributions. Anyone volunteer to take charge of it / maintain it?
