Interesting. You could partner with another empire to defeat your mutual opponent, but if you do this to the enemy only in your partners zone of occupation (and the planets he can breath) you not only defeat the enemy but weaken your partner so you crush him in a few more years.

Hmm, I have never had this happen yet but one day just for fun, I think I might try to wipe out every single planet on the map except my home world using this method.
