I always set all ships to break formation and to rely on individual ship stratagies, so the actual fleet stratigy/formations are irrelivant.

You NEED to do that in multiplayer. The typical MP is intense and dosen't tolerate weakness like single player games against the AI.

The fleet strategy may be irrelevant, but the formation will still affect the initial positions of the ships, which can matter sometimes.
