I think I've killed Solaris and ended up with only some of his equipment before. Finding trinkets and lesser items seems more likely than 20-40%, to me, though Arralen you said you did some tests on trinkets and only got them 20% of the time?

I know you do have to catch and defeat the item-carriers before they leave the map.
