Two questions for the modders out there.

Custom Groups don't work.

the 'space orks' and the 'space vikings' both are supposed to use troops, however i have not tried either of them. they should be in the downloads section on this board, though.

someone,
here is another link that deals with the AI using troops. Check out the Aquilaeian, and Orks (both included in the TDM-Modpack) as well as the Vikings (download available in the Mod Archive) for inspiration on troops and transports.
Sorry, I can't answer your other question. I have only done AI so far.

Thanks for the help! It's a pity about the custom Groups, but the answers to my first questions helped alot! Now my infantry can come in useful.

It is a shame that you can't add custom design types to the AI. Oh, well.
