Sparta was another noted democracy, although theirs had more in common with the Roman Republic than the Athenian democracy. Also, Zylithan, if that is your opinion than I would suggest reading some of the works of John Stewart Mills, who was famously against what he called "Tyrany by majority."

My spartan skills are a bit limited, but I've never heard anyone calling them a democracy before.
I would have placed Rome as a middle ground between Athen and Sparta, but I might be wrong.

Sparta was an oligarchy that had democratic elements in it. I think they had an elected king that was voted on by the elders of some number of families or something.
