Popping the battery got it to POST. I already had the backup, so I just stuck in a bootable floppy (WHY?! does the bootable, installable, fdisk-including Win98 CD not have FORMAT?), formated, and so far so good.
of course, I don't have everything in yet, so watch it explode

I feel your pain. I took the easy way out and just plunked down some cash this weekend to buy a new system. I was lucky though. Mine didn't totally die on me. It just locks up occasionally, the CD and printer stopped working, etc. It's three years old, so it was easier just to replace it.
The game will wait for you. Take your time.

There is a small chance that if there is a virus
it could have written to any device with an upgradeable chip such at the bios, network card, or video card,
This is rare but it would constantly reinfect a system and set off alarms. You might want to remove any card you do not need to run the system
And yes, do check the memory.
