I don't think the markata chassis is really designed for low end equipment like the black steel kite shield. Try something a bit more upmarket like a golden shield or accursed shield, along with artifacts in every other slot and you should see their full potential. Then laugh as your enemies crumble to your 'lowly' markata.

you should also empower them to 9 in every path, this will further boost their stats and give them access to self buffing; that will unlock their true power.
