Re: Advice on learning the game
I would put it this way: If all you're interested in is SP, than ignorance is bliss! You don't want to find out (except on your own) all the tricks and cool strategies.
Because once you do learn them, then it doesn't really matter how many AI-improvement mods, hand-built AI pretenders, impossible AIs, etc., you go for - you'll always come to a point in the game where you know you're going to win (or lose, but same difference). Then you're just going through the motions.
After that, SP becomes joyless (OK, that's my opinion), and is only useful for gaming MP strategies (and I bless and curse the day I found out about the Dubug mod in that regard, as now I can't/don't even need to play SP much to test strategies and tactics anymore).
So if all you want to do is play SP, stay away from the forums! Well, except for the mod forums, perhaps. Because the more information you get here, the sooner the SP experience will likely be ruined for you.
If you want to try your hand at MP however...

Care to explain Debug Mode to the uninitiated?

Re: Advice on learning the game
Debug mod, not mode. It's a mod which basically allows you to recruit/build/cast everything you want for free so you can playtest all funky combos like what if I equipped a Gift-of-reasoned prophetised troll knight with a flambeau, Amon Hotep and a ring of wizardry?
I daresay that SP remains fun if you use for instance the chaos maps that Gandalf Parker generates. Or if you actually try to roleplay a bit or try fancy strategies.

Letting us know if we were helpful to you might be a good idea. If we were not, we can try again :P

Re: Advice on learning the game
I have to agree with the OP, I picked up Dom3 and played the demo a couple times and then abandoned it for a year or two because I just didn't understand how to marshal my resources to win. Eventually I stumbled onto these forums and Baalz's guides. I had in fact started up an SP game as Helheim and was slowly making headway against one AI, and then about to get crushed by the other AIs, when I read Baalz's Helheim guide. Suddenly, I got it. Oh, so THAT's how you are supposed to use those, THAT's why these over here are getting crushed, THAT's what is missing from my bless...
Then I dove into MP with Helheim in a big game and did very well indeed.
