Maybe the problem has to do with fighter launches? More specifically, maybe enough carriers are destroyed during the battle that there are too many fighters left floating around. Just a guess, of course.

BTW - I have to agree that is one HUGE battle... over 500 ships, including 83 carriers? How many fighters are on those carriers? And a planet in the middle, I assume filled with weapon platforms?

More likely too many launched at once; the survivors should only be a fraction of that number.
