Please throw a newbie a lifeline
Hi all. I was so disgusted with Moo3, I finally broke down and bought SEIV. (I'll worry about GalCiv later) I've played the tutorial through, and plinked around with several games.
But I've got to admit, I'm having a little trouble getting a feel for the game, and the "newbie" thread here and the extras and mods on the CD are hurting, not helping.

Can the regulars here point me to-

 1) The most recent, comprehensive faq/walkthrough, minus the 19 pages of Q&A on the newbie thread, and

 2) a good breakdown of the different mods and add ons, with recommendations on why I'd want to use this or that mod.

Thanks in advance for any help, and my apologies for what I'm sure are repeat questions. I've spent an hour wading through all of the SEIV info out there without even scratching the surface, so I figured I'd better just ask.

The Newbie FAQ here is more like 50 pages, if that's the one you are talking about :
http://www.shrapnelgames.com/cgi-bin...;f=23;t=005518
From the Other Reading section:

0.1 Other Reading
0.1.1 First, read: Malfador Q&A Section and: Un-Official Space Empires IV Strategy and Tactics Page ..
To get info on tech, components, facilities etc use the SE4 Mod Utility 1.53 .
Another GREAT guide can be found here: SE4 Dubious Strategy Guide (Zip file)
The Encyclopedia Malfadorica has articles about everything SE4, and you can write some stuff too!

As far as mods go, see this thread:
http://www.shrapnelgames.com/cgi-bin...;f=23;t=007983
You may just want to read the readme files in each mod to see if you are interested.

The best way is to play and learn. Check this forum for questions or post them and I guarantee they will be answered very quickly.

Welcome to the SE4 community, and I bet you will soon be hooked.

Slick.

Also in addition to what Slick already mentioned, be sure to upgrade the newest patch 1.84 as well as the new patches for the mods

Thanks. I don't mind doing my homework- it's just that in this case, there's so much information to choose from, I wasn't sure where to get started. |

It's all good. Once you get the hang of it you will be happy. I am pretty new too. I also am here because of Moo 3. I would reccomend the TDM mod, it makes the A.I alot better. Of course the real joy of the game comes from playing multiplayer. That is all you should need for a little while. Once you get the hang of things you can add whatever you like. |

Don't read the entire newbie faq thread. Just find the post that is the latest Version, and use the find feature to search for answers to specific questions.
Also, you can go to Malfador's web site and then to the SE4 section. Look for the Mods List link on the right side panel, and click on it. It has descriptions of and links to most mods for se4 (and others will be added as they are uncovered).

Re: Please throw a newbie a lifeline
Well, I did MOO every way posible. Then, the same for MOO 2.
Enter a long gap as MOO 3 was being developed.

 Enter SE 4.

That's pretty much the end of the story. MOO 3 reviews (from people who purchased it) convinced me I was already playing the best 4X game around.

Stick with it and you may find you love it. It's more detailed, IMHO, than either MOOs were (I don't know about MOO 3 since I never got swindled out of my money).

I realize my advice may be different...but I'd suggest getting very familiar with standard game. By that, I mean Gold (to Version 1.84/patch 3). When you feel comfortable with all there is to learn there, then try some mods. I think having a good understanding of the un-modded game lends to understanding the different mods.

Also, the best friends you have are right here. You'd be surprised at how much time they can spend responding to questions.

Finally, PBW is a must. It's easy to find newbie games there. Jump in!

I got my money back, but I'm still bitterly disappointed. GOD, I wanted that game to be good. |
