I could play this week, but I'd rather wait until next week. Partly because I had to reinstall windows yesterday and haven't gotten around to reinstalling OpenRPG and recreating my character sheet yet, but also because I have a fair number of other things I need to do, so my free time is somewhat limited atm.

Heh. I installed XP without formatting and from a breif look, everythings still there. So I'm just going to re-install anything that doesn't work.

Wow, that's quite a jump in XP. Could I please have the 20 extra I need for level 7? So close...
Randallw
January 18th, 2005, 09:22 PM
Only 20 pts. I gave it some thought. It would be best to get it done before we start instead of allocating play time to levelling up, but where would I set the line?. Please give me another 200 pts so i can level, or 100 pts. I have decided if not between sessions at least before the start of campaigns I will allow up to a 100 pt bonus to ensure levelling before we start.
douglas
January 19th, 2005, 05:45 AM
Just making sure, but that's a "yes", right? The trip to the Glacier certainly seems major enough to merit the bonus to me.
Regardless, I've got a homemade feat I'd like approval for:
Maintain Focus [Psionic]:
Prerequisite Feat: Psionic Meditation
Choose one feat, power, or ability that requires expending your psionic focus to use. You still must be psionically focused to use the feat, power, or ability, but you no longer expend your focus in doing so. This may in some cases allow you to use an additional ability that requires expending psionic focus simultaneously with the chosen ability, or it may just eliminate the need for refocusing afterwards. The affected feat, power, or ability is chosen at the time this feat is taken and never changes. This feat may be taken multiple times but does not stack - each time, a different feat, power, or ability must be chosen.
I would choose Psionic Endowment as the feat to be affected. For information on psionic focus, read the Gain Psionic Focus part of the concentration skill description here (http://www.wizards.com/d20/files/v35/PsionicSkills.rtf). Since I already have Psionic Meditation, which reduces the time to focus to a move action, this feat would allow me to boost my save DCs either without giving up my movement to refocus or while also using a metapsionic feat.
Randallw
January 19th, 2005, 05:51 AM
Yes, take the extra points to get the next level. I'll give the new feat some thought.
Fyron
January 19th, 2005, 06:04 AM
Umm... you have not even 11000 XP. You need 15000 to get to level 6, and 21000 to get to level 7. There was no leveling up here...
Unless, of course, Randall is trying to say that we just earned 11000 experience for killing a few monsters, which would be insane.
Randallw
January 19th, 2005, 08:12 AM
Actually that is exactly what I was saying. I don't mind the criticism, it's exactly what I was expecting. I couldn't believe the figure myself, but I have checked it twice and if it's wrong I am missing something big. But I don't know what it is.
heres an example.
you fought 8 wolves with CR 1 each.
thats 300 xp each x 8 = 2400xp
divide the 2400 xp by the 5 party members at that time gives 480.
There was also 5 Ogre Skeletons (CR6). 6 Ogre Skeletons. 2 Assasins (CR6), and the Dark CLeric.
I thought I must have been wrong and it's CR for the whole encounter, but it insists I determine xp for each creature. Since my doubts seemed to be wrong (though I couldn't forget them) I thought I had forgotten how quickly levels can rise. I must admit though that I may have failed to represent the creatures encountered at their full strngth.
Fyron
January 19th, 2005, 04:24 PM
Those CRs you have are way too high. I think an Ogre is a large creature, which gives an ogre skeleton a CR of 1. Even if it is huge, it would have a CR of 2. So that is 11 of them at CR 1. Even an ogre itself only has a CR of 2...
11 ogre skeletons + 8 wolves = 19 x 300 / 5 = 1140 exp
What level were the assassins and the cleric?
I must admit though that I may have failed to represent the creatures encountered at their full strngth.
You are the DM. You can adjust XP awards ad hoc. Too easy? Give less XP. Too hard? Give more. Use your judgement.
douglas
January 19th, 2005, 04:54 PM
CR of skeletons is determined by hit dice, not size. Ogres have 4, so they would be CR 2.
Fyron
January 19th, 2005, 04:59 PM
CR is determined by size. I am looking at the Monster Manual right now.

So am I. Besides that, here's what the SRD has to say about it here (http://www.wizards.com/d20/files/v35/MonstersS.rtf):

1/2 1/6

Fyron
January 19th, 2005, 05:23 PM
blech. They really screwed everything up with that stupid 3.5 edition. Oh well. The ogre skeletons were CR 2 then, still not 6.
Randallw
January 19th, 2005, 08:38 PM

Hey guys. I'm new to the boards but saw this here D&D thread, and was curious if there was space for one more to hop on board? I've not really read far back on the thread... there ARE 36 pages worth of posts at this point, so I'm sure you'll forgive.

The party composition page is very out of date. The party currently has a rogue, ranger/cleric, wizard, and psion. There's also a fighter that isn't playing any more, but we're keeping his character around because we're short on fighter types.
The main piece of info you need for character creation is that we're doing standard point buy with 40 points. Oh wait, you say you haven't played in 10 years. In that case, you'll need to do a lot of reading up on 3.5 edition rules (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/srd35).
Edit: Oh yeah, you also need to know that we're all 5th level, so that's what you'll be starting at.

Welcome to the group... we have been looking for someone to join for awhile and think you will have alot of fun.
I know what you mean.... I almost always play some kinda of Cleric normally Ranger/Cleric and have been missing it for while. There is no CRPG that has the fun and breath of flexibility that a good pen and paper game of D&D has. I have been playing D&D since the Expert rules came out.

I've got a few ideas for characters I've been tossing around for quite a while. I've had a jones to play a female rogue (yes, I'm a guy) but I'm glad to fill in spots where needed. If a fighter type is called for, I'd be okay with playing a cleric? Oh are we in the Forgotten Realms? I've got access to some 3rd Edition books but never had a call to read them. I play Star Wars in RL so I've got a grasp on the changes.
Let me do my research through the day today and do some stat rolling. I'll put a character frame around the results.

The world is Homebrew. The party comes from Oerth but, due to a magical accident, they appeared on my world (Except for Douglas who is from another country). I haven't got a huge tome, but instead develop it as we go. The party just arrived at a castle set on a glacier, so I would assume your character would be at the monastery for some reason.

Just to be absolutely clear, we are using a method of character generation that does not involve stat rolling. The only dice you roll during character creation will be for hit points. For ability scores, you have 40 points to spend among the six scores at the following costs (before racial modifiers):
<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>Ability Score Cost
8 0
9 1
10 2
11 3

Most of our original party was quite new to D&D. I only played a rogue because the starting lineup had no thieving skills at all. You can have it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
We have: Lae'nial, an elven wizard; Shaorin, a psion of some forgotten race; Rasorow, a ranger/cleric (I think...) that is either human or half-elven; Draknor, an ever-drunk dwarven fighter; another ranger of some name that I forgot (he was Randall's PC before he took over as DM); and my elven rogue, Sulimo Mandrallorn. Just a question from one who's interested, but not totally versed in RPGs. Why does it seem that player characters are always half-elven, instead of full-elven? Is there something about being full elf that makes a player character limited?
RudyHuxtable
February 3rd, 2005, 04:19 PM
Now that you mention it, it seems this group is half-elf top-heavy. However, I've played RPG's for years and have always been human or halfling, so for me it's a change http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
This game has a huge elf/human storyline so being a combination of the two is a great way to create stories and conflict.

Not really, no. They have different strengths and weaknesses than full elves. Just a different option. I personally don't see much point in being a half-elf. They are quite similar to humans in D&D, so might as well just be a human...

Well we were at 2 elves and 1 half-breed before, but with Sulimo disappearing and your half-elf arriving, it does indeed tip the balance. I'll just have to make something wacky to make it better. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/stupid.gif

I've been working on my map (I already had the continent shape from the demo). Only problem so far is I don't think I can export part of the main map to work on regional maps. Anyway here's an example from the southeast of the map. You can see the elf forest, a duchy I have plans for and the mountains where the Dwarves live, and right down in the corner is part of the desert the Thri'Keen come from (by the way I already had all this planned). Don't worry about the quality, I reduce it to save space.

As a result I slept for practically 12 hours last night. I went to bed at 10pm so I could try to get up at 8am. It succeded partly in that I woke up at 5am http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/redface.gif. Unprepared to wait for 3 hours I went back to bed sure that since I already woke up I would be awake enough to get up. Unfortunately I went into my induced coma http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif where I was woken up by my clock but was only half awake and unable to move. It is possible I could try to wake up in time by not taking my medication the night before, but on this occasion I had already done that the night before and it is NOT a good idea to do it twice in a row.

I should have bothered to write all this before but never had time (although I wrote it in my notebook). Anyway as a little treat while I am away (and because I was bored this afternoon http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif) I typed up a brief introduction to Va'Qum (which if you didn't know is the name of my world)
Excerpts from the Human book of Creation and history.
From nothing was creation. Holding its hands together the first god formed the world. Breathing into its hands it created the wind, and from its sweat formed the oceans. Seeing that custodians of its creation were needed it thought and created many lesser gods. To these gods were granted dominion over the world and responsibility to populate the lands and seas. Arbor was the manifestation of nature, the growth of the world. The first, he covered the lands in green plants and animals and filled the seas with creatures. Above the land he placed the birds, gifted with flight. Even Arbor though granted power to his subordinates. He created lesser gods to watch over each of his domains. Ignis, lord of flame, fed the fires of the world. Next came Tor, unyielding master of the earth, gaining command of the land. Aqa , lord of the watery depths and all that flowed, and finally Aeris, the unseen, who was formed from the breaths of animals and whom lifted the birds in the sky. Their first act was to join and create in the sky the sun. Formed from flame, it was also solid and existed in the sky. Its warmth flowed from the sky to shine on the animals. However soon its heat burned the land and sea and so its flame was extinguished, however nature could not exist without its light, so it was decreed that for half the time it would shine, and this was called day, and for half the time, called night, its flame would dim barely holding back the dark. From this decision was formed two new deities, the luminous and the umber, each responsible for the light and the dark in turn.
From almost the beginning existed the mortal creations, plants, animals, birds and fish. Created by the gods they formed nature, and left, to their own, they lived and died, in harmony, no part overcoming another. However by this time lesser gods were created and wishing to emulate their masters they created their own creatures. Tall Karelas took the trees of his master from the eternal forests and carving them he created the Elves. Tall and slim they blended into that from which they were created, the trees, and dwelt there. Karelas looked on his creations with pride, thus creating their downfall for basking in their creators light the Elves could not help but consider them the greatest in creation. The god, Garthus, looked at what his friend had created and felt envy. He existed before Karelas and so surely was greater. Taking the hidden animals, he formed his creation, the Orcs, and within them placed his envy and anger, from that time the Orcs looked upon the Elves and swore eternal hatred. There were others. The other gods created their own races. Dwarves were formed from the deep stone. Hard as stone they kept to themselves and hid in the depths, out of the light, hoarding the treasure they mined. The god, Huhm, took the creatures under his rule and formed from them the race of men. Not suited for the deep forests, or the dark places, or the mountains, they spread out from their lands and filled those places left. The Elves looked down on the men of Huhm, and watched as they cut down trees making more space as they grew and grew, for only the Orcs could rival mans ability to grow. After this came the other races, Ursine, Aroonin, and others.
Great Empires were built. In the depths the Dwarves descended, finding greater and greater treasure, but keeping the most to themselves, only occasionally coming out into the light to trade with others. Elves secure within their forests developed greater magic and using their power built great cities that soared into the air. Mankind built their own empires but fighting amongst themselves caused them to fall and rise and fall again. One Empire of note grew so great its people began to rival the gods, but they took their greatness too far and delved into realms not suited for man. They fell to their own greed and in the process released horrors onto the world.
In time the Orcs grew great. Taking what they wanted by force they became a great Empire. Man and the other races, save Elves, were not prepared and became slaves, but eventually the elves secure in their woodland homes and defended by mighty powers equal to the Orcs brute strength took note and decided to bring down the Orcs, not for the sake of the other races but to guarantee their own survival. They struck at the Orcs, beginning a war that would last for an eon. Heedless of the other races, they unleashed great power striking down masters and servants alike. The Dwarves by their own fought the Orcs and their servants in the earth, but did not ascend to join the Elves. The power of the Elves was great, but the Orcs were seemingly without number and had hordes of lesser beings to carry out their will.
In time however the last remnants of both Empires met to end their struggle. Led by their gods they fought, and near the end Karelas and Garthus, once friends but now sworn enemies, fought. Until this time the Gods themselves could walk the world, but as the two foes fought their unleashed power would scorch the earth striking down friends and foes alike. Never again would the first god allow such power to be unleashed on the world. For many days and night the two gods fought, until Garthus cleft Karelas with his axe. With Karelas brought to his knees, Garthus stood triumphant finally realising his wish to be superior. The Elven hosts rebounded in shock to see their god brought down and the Orc hoards shouted their victory. But as Garthus held back his final blow, basking in his victory, Karelas used the last of his strength to pierce his opponent with his spear. The Orcs, on the edge of victory, were now the ones to reel in defeat. Emboldened by their gods sacrifice; the Elves struck back, all but annihilating their foes. From that day the Orcs would never again rule. They were removed from the world and their legacy passed on to their servants, the goblins, though some rumours hint that the Dwarves still fight them in the depths, although of this the Dwarves speak little.
Freed from servitude the other races again built their lands. The Elves though, left bitter by their loss, looked down with increasing arrogance at the other races. They had paid the supreme sacrifice to free the lesser races and now year by year the humans cut down more trees and moved into the forests, growing more and more by the decade. Eventually the Elves decided that only they were suited to guide the other races. For a hundred years they worked their way into power, many generations to humans, but less than a short lifetime to the Elves. Then there came the day that the humans awoke to find themselves in thrall to the Elves. For three hundred years they laboured under Elven domination, unable to fight the Elves magic.
There came the day though that a man would rise from the masses to lead his people from Elven mastery. His name was Rad, and with his band of companions and with the help of a resistance movement he created he led mankind against the Elves. Rad himself slew the Elven king and the rest of the Elves retreated into their deep forests. There they would take refuge planning their retribution. Meanwhile Rad was declared the Emperor and his companions were named the dukes of the various provinces created from the new human lands. Rad would eventually ascend to godhood, by the prayers of his followers he would become defender of the Empire he created.
The time is now 200 years later.

Looks good. I don't suppose you could go into a bit more detail about the whole pantheon so I can choose one for my character to worship? As it is his character sheet says "None", and that's just not right for someone with the Vow of Poverty and several other exalted feats. While I could go with the same explanation that allows clerics to follow "the cause of goodness" or some such instead of a god, I never have liked that option very much. The list garnered from your post consists of a god of nature; four gods of the elements; and four gods of specific races, two of which are dead, and the other two are both human, and one of them is local. None of those really fit my character - he's not the type to worship the god of a particular race, I don't envision him as a pyromaniac or the equivalent for other elements, and while he respects nature I wouldn't put it past him to torch a whole forest if he had a really good reason for it - though something on that scale would be a last resort and require a really good reason.

I'll try to work on it tomorrow. At the moment I'm getting an eye ache. I was thinking some sort of God of Knowledge. Your character come from the south where Psionic masters meditate in their towers and worship the god of the mind. At least that's what I had in mind (excuse the pun). I can also include details of your origin. I got the exp psionics book and can now understand more what sort of character you have.

Hmm, that might work for the general background he comes from, but I'd think Shaorin is considered something of a rebel by the dominant organization, a worshiper of a competing god or possibly a minority sect of the same religion. The dominant religion or sect promotes the pursuit of knowledge for it's own sake, or for the enrichment of the researcher, while the minority hold that they have a responsibility to use their knowledge and the power that comes from it for the greater good of all. Shaorin would be one of a few that take this to an extreme of self denial, constantly wandering as dirt-poor vagabonds doing good deeds whenever they see the opportunity. This sect or religion would feature a much larger portion of adventurers than the general population and has little central organization. Hmm, now that I'm thinking about it, maybe I should try to come up with a prestige class for these extremist psionic do-gooders http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif. Also, there's no reason to restrict a God of Knowledge to lands where psionics are relatively common; I'd think such a god would be one of the more common patrons of wizards as well, and of course there are all those scholarly priests. Perhaps Bishop Artor Sinn follows him http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif?

hmm. I did have something in mind, but what you are thinking is more elaborate. Here is some more background, as I may be too busy tomorrow to do anything.
The Zethamn chronicles.
In ages past a vast human empire existed. Fuelled by magic, the Council of mages strictly controlled all magical powers in their realm. However they soon came to learn that another power was growing. Year by year more and more people began to manifest magic like powers. These powers however, instead of feeding from the magic in nature, manifested through the power of their minds. The Mages, unwilling to have within their empire mystical power they could not control began a program to round up and deal with these Psionic individuals. Having no teachings to guide their new powers a select few were guided south across the great wastes. They were led by a prophet who taught them the worship of a new deity. Zethamn, the Shining Hand. This deity granted divine powers to his followers but also guided those individuals gifted with Psionic powers. The refugees crossed the wastes and were guided to a new land. Within this new land they established a kingdom fighting off many beasts and monsters. Over the eons the kingdom, united in their worship of Zethamn, grew. Most of the descendants of these refugees are little different from normal humans and occupy themselves much as other humans do, but the Church of Zethamn also keeps watch on the populace. Those children seen to harbour Psionic powers are taken from their families and educated to develop their abilities. Most of the Psionic masters pursue knowledge and study for its own sake, but a new minority have started to question this neutral attitude and advocate using their gifts and knowledge to help the common people.
I think the god itself could be based on Zuoken from the exp psionics book. The way I see it is as an Arabic/Indian setting.

I am sorry, but any more I have to many things going on to make the games. I am also going to be out of town the next few weekends.
Additionally you may have noticed I have not been around much anymore. Thats because I have been working with/on other things. I will still pop in the forums from time to time (generally to catch up on SEV news) but I will not be around much. Its been fun but need to move on for awhile. Will undoubtedly be back at some point - just not now.

Actually, we just say the right amount of gold can substitute for any spell component that isn't a special quest item.
Looks like we need a new cleric. You up for it, Luke?

Douglas, I have been studying the Psionic rules and I can't find something. I thought each time you used your powers you made a concentration check to regain the points. Is this correct, because I can't find the rule, or am I wrong?
douglas
May 5th, 2005, 12:40 AM
It's not to regain the power points, it's to regain psionic focus. You see, I have the feat Greater Psionic Endowment which adds +2 to the save DC of any power I use it with, but expends psionic focus whenever I use it. Before I can use it again, I have to spend a movement action (would be full-round if not for my Psionic Meditation feat) to make a concentration check to regain psionic focus. For reference, see the section about psionic focus in the Concentration skill entry in the Expanded Psionics Handbook, and the Psionic Endowment, Greater Psionic Endowment, and Psionic Meditation feats.

Randallw

It appears to be monsters that lash out and strike a blow against the opponent but it does not involve claws. I think now that it just means a natural attack that counts as crushing.

Poke - Is this game going to start up again? Lae'nial is in the middle of a crisis of concience, you know.
(On that - Can Lae'nial take a level of cleric to get 'Detect Evil' without choosing a deity? My personal objection, not his)
Fyron

In the evenings on Monday to Thursday should be doable.
Clerics should always have some sort of patron deity. Becoming a cleric/priest/monk/whatever is no light matter idly wandered into, I should think.

Yeah - But it's not something I feel comfortable with. As I said, my objection, not his. It's just that a simplistic person searches for simplistic solutions, and to Lae'nial, the spell 'Detect Evil' sounds great. Solve all his problems...Except the ones inside him. It's just what he'd try.

Generally, a diety only grants spell powers to highly devoted followers. People looking for a quick fix would probably be turned away or simply ignored. That's how I see it, anyways.

Get a wand of Detect Evil and put some skill points in Use Magic Device. Exclusive skills don't exist any more in 3.5, only class and cross-class http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif. If you don't like the idea of periodically having to buy another wand, there are some "Eternal Wands", I think from the Eberron Campaign Setting book, that have 2 charges per day rather than a set limit for the life of the wand.
I have hardly any regularly scheduled commitments outside of work, so 6-midnight any weekday works for me. If I've got the time zone right, that would be 8am-2pm for Randallw, and 3-9pm for Fyron. Anytime Saturday works, too. Sundays, I've got a local D&D game going.
