Narf, be nice to your cat otherwise on behalf of felines everywhere, I shall instruct it to bite your leg off.

Stone Mill
August 5th, 2003, 05:56 PM
Perhaps you can curb it's rubbing on things using the Pavlovian behaviorial technique of pounding it on the head with a giant mallet.

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Erax
August 5th, 2003, 06:08 PM
Bad idea. The cat's rubbing its head on things to leave its scent. IOW, it's marking its territory. If you discourage it from rubbing it may try another method. Not good for the keyboard.

Growltigger
August 5th, 2003, 06:36 PM
Hmmmm, cats generally rub their heads to scent mark their territory or as a sign of greeting (if you watch cats, when they walk up to each other, they either hiss and spit, ignore each other or rub heads).

My cat has a new one. Most of the time when you see it, it gives you that "I'm not hungry and your' not interesting" sort of look, but in the morning, it has taken to jumping into the car if I make the mistake (as I often do) of opening the car, and then having to go back to the front door to give the current Mrs GT a goodbye kiss.

So far, this has resulted in me getting up to 3 miles into my journey to work, before I have had to turn round cos I noticed a small furry shape sitting on the backseat, or have heard a yowl of discomfort as I took a turning too fast!

Loser
August 5th, 2003, 06:54 PM
Hmm... noting the reaction to Stone Mill's post there seems to be an unwritten rule against applying cartoon violence to cats, or perhaps all household pets, or even all non-sentient beings, or maybe just all non-posting beings, the self-awareness of cats perhaps being subject to some dispute.

That said, let me tell you that a bat-out-of-hell has nothing on a cat-out-of-a-cardboard-box (friend did not wish to purchase a pet carrier).

Growltigger
August 5th, 2003, 07:23 PM
Loser, I agree with you there. I picked up one of our cats from the farm, it was part feral, and the farmer presented it to me in a cardboard box,

I opened the box in the car, and the cat went off like a claymore, with about the same result. First stop, vets to get the cat injected for cat flu etc and de-fleaed, next stop home to drop cat off, third stop, the doctors, for a lot of patching up etc

Stone Mill
August 5th, 2003, 07:29 PM
The really odd thing is that narf is a mouse who owns a cat...

I mean take a look at all the cartoons with cats and mice, and the cat is always the bad guy... like Tom anf Jerry. Poor Tom was just doing his thing and that bLasted mouse Jerry would instigate a fight, and Tom would get beat up and such all the time.

It appears it is in some cases taboo to inflict catroon violence on a mouse as well.

Loser
August 5th, 2003, 07:39 PM
That's great, Gt. I'm laughing quite a bit picturing the farmer offering you an active cardboard box (active for cardboard, certainly) with a variety of different facial expressions. I can't seem to come up with one that actually seems to suite the situation, they all just end up comical.

Then there's Gt, slightly suspicious, accepting a cardboard box that occasionally wiggles and shakes of its own accord. He takes it to the car, sets it down on the seat beside him and prepares to drive off. Then, before he starts the car, he looks down at the box with a thoughtful, concerned expression.

He leans over and lifts one of the flaps a bit, sees nothing. The box is still. He opens the box and the camera switches from a view inside the car to a somewhat distant view of the car from the outside, there is a flurry of movement inside the car and it rocks back an forth. Screaming and yowling can be heard, loud, but from afar. And the cat is making a lot of noise too.

Now, the really fun question, how did the farmer get the cat in to the box to begin with?

Erax
August 5th, 2003, 08:49 PM
My wife's cousins (three brothers) are all deaf, and their parents are elderly and don't hear too well either. They once left a drawer open, their cat crawled in, then someone closed the drawer with the cat inside. Two days later, their mother opened the drawer. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

The cat assaulted the old lady, then took off. They couldn't find her (the cat) for days afterwards.

what webcomic? what warnings? thanks for posting, i didn't want to double-post.

speaking of webcomics, i'm done with keenspace except for the annoying fact that it doesn't have a 'new' filter, and i'm done with Onlinecomics.net. anybody know of any other webcomic sites? because we all know that 112?!?!?!?! plus webcomics isn't enough. although i must say that not all of them update that fast, that some of them are off for the summer and some of them are discontinued. and i only read four a day. i've still got plenty of hours left. and, admittedly, there's probably another 10-20 unorganized...

ok, ok, i have a lot of webcomics.

for those of you who don't know yet, i've got a role-play going with Jack and Krsqk. that's what that big, name takes up most of the screen thread that's named 'this is a thread to attract SE4 forumers to the first Dungeon Oddessy roleplay thread' is about. no, it's not the role-play. it's just the thread where we talk about the role-play. it was started as a peice of advertising to get people to join. this is another peice of advertising, since it doesn't seem to be working.

and this post started so small...

and wait! there's more! for just 99 99 99...one thing i've been thinking about is another role-play...what, with one that's still starting?...for the sole purpose of grabbing an avatar and having big huge fights with each other and robots and mechs and laser cannon's. or should i go to sleep anyway? well, i will anyway. now.

The High School I went to is over a hundred twenty years old. It has the largest number of active alumni of any High School in the world, I am told. (Does all the world use 'High School'? I think that makes the title a bit odd but...)

The school mascot used to be a very stereotypical native american with a huge nose, they called him Eagle Beak. Some time in the early eighties it was changed to a eagle with a similar face for political reasons. The alumni were very angry about this.

Now, that might have been what the mascot looked like, and what his name was, but that's not what he was. The mascot of General William J. Palmer High School is the Terror. We were the Palmer Terrors. While I attended, Terror Basketball took state twice. Terror Hockey took it three times. Terror football was three games away from a national record for consequtive losses by a 4-A school when they beat the city champ in a fluke.

I'm wondering when that's going to get changed, considering recent connotations of the word 'Terror'...

I wonder who will be bothered, what they will say about it, and if it will bother me.

While out shopping clothes with a friend our foreign minister Anna Lindh was stabbed several times by an unknown man yesterday. This morning she died at the hospital.

I can't understand, why her?
The Last murder on a politician, our prime minister Olof Palme in 1986 was in a disturbed way understandable. He was a sharp politician and many thought badly about him, he had enemies
But Anna Lindh! She was liked by everyone, atleast that's what we thought. Even her opponents used to respect her and be friends with her. She was generally thought of as the next swedish prime minister.

Now her husband and two sons (school age) are left without wife and mother.
And we Swedes are left mourning, we thought that what happened 1986 would never happen here again.

What will this bring? Bodyguards for the politicians? Will they become isolated? Will our society change?

Darned!!!

There has been two occasions of pie throwing, one time at the king and once at a leading politician.
The royal family has bodyguards but the politicians only have it when the situation calls for it, very seldom that is.
I saw on TV today that the prime minister had a body guard following him a few meters behind when he went into the building for the press conference, so now they have them. We will se if it will be needed in the future.

Wackos who kills people we have, but they usually targets first availible person.
There was another incident of a psychopath running into a childcare facility and stabbing a five year old to death!

It really gets to me as I have my kids at daycare too!

We're really a small country, only 9 million inhabitants so the recruitment base for celebrity killing wackos is a lot smaller than in bigger countries.

Rutha, its sad, but also a point to remember out there. There are so many wackos and though we here in the U.S. are being chastised for what we have done against terrorists, I can't help but wonder what people expect the Israelis to do when some religious fanatic blows up a bus stop. Before 9-11 I had naive thoughts that if Israel would just give some more concessions, things would be better over there, but I was wrong. ACK, sorry to go off track http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

When I was in Sweden in 1980 I remember hearing about Olof Palme, forgot that he was killed. I don't recall why he was a controversy person though.

You don't already have bodyguards for your politicians?

Sweden must be a strange place (http://www.plif.com/archive/wc146.gif), indeed.

Seriously, though, have there not been any other attempts on political figures since '86?

Does Sweden not have those wackos that kill celebrates just to be known as the guy who killed a celebrity?

In the US, at least, the vast majority of death threats are empty threats, and can discounted. It is possible that the letter was ignored because it was thought not to be one of those few non-empty death threats.

Hang on - didn't this used to be the nonsense thread?

I do recall that quick sort was way faster than bubble sort.<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Which sort is best depends on a lot of things; bubble sort is O(n^2) (n: number of data elements to be sorted) for its worst case - the element that is supposed to be first is in the Last position. Its best case, an already sorted list, allows it to have a trapdoor and do the "sort" in O(n). Insertion and selection sort are also O(n^2) in the worst case. Quicksort is, in the average case, O(n*lg(n)), but O(n^2) in its worst case. Mergesort is always O(n*lg(n)), as is Heapsort. All of the above sorts are based on comparisons.

Radix sort is a different beast entierly - it isn't based on comparisons, it is based on indexing. You need to know certain things about the data you are sorting to make it work (type, bit significance order, data length), but given those, it does the sort in O(k*n) (k is the maximum data element length). How it works: You make a set of stacks based on how many chunks you want to cut your sort key up into, and label them by the value that particular chunk represents (e.g., if you were sorting byte arrays, you might go with 256 stacks, numbered 0-255 - you may want an additional stack if your list elements aren't all the same length - a 'beyond bounds' stack). You then take each list element, and put it on the stack representing that list element's least significant chunk. When you are finished stacking the list, you put those stacks back into the list in a particular order, and stack them from the list again, using the next least significant chunk of your sort key. You continue this process until you have gone through the entire sort key, and gather them up; the list will then be sorted. It is a totally bizzare sorting algorythm, but it works.

What's wrong with the name as it stands now? Just because it's getting old doesn't mean it's bad.

Oh, I get it - Rutha can't change it anymore, due to the time limits the new software has for going back and editing things.

Oh no! The admins are coming in and secretly changing the name of the thread at night! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

(You know, that actually sounds kind of plausible, given the thread's most recent title...)

The first post does say "Edited by Suicide Junky" - perhaps at the request of Rutha. Nice to know there are ways around the limits - ask a moderator!
