Hi.
Here is some mixed response, my thoughts only and no real truth:

The appereance of the Lurk report has improved dramaticly, but I think the content has worsened.

I don't think I see that much new information in it, this might be becourse I surf the forum several times every day and don't really qualify as a lurker.
What I'd like to see is a short summary of the popular threads, what has been written in the "MOO3 is out" thread for example. I don't read all the threads, only thos that interest me.
I do realize that to sum up the popular threads the work going into the Lurk report woul multiply very much.
Perhaps you could use some sort of temporal tech to take yourself out of phase with our time continuum and soo extensively check all Posts during an entire workday, spend another day writing it down and then return to our time frame without loosing more than a few minutes!
Is that a good suggestion?

I could scan the entire 'Forum' for all the 'New' threads! But, then what do I take out to make room for all those? My intent is to give anyone a small look into the threads on the 'Forums', that are active. Sorry, I can not please 'everyone'. I do the best I can. I might thing about adding some sort of synopsis of '1 or 2' of the 'New' threads. We will see. Thanks, for the comments!

OK I probably going to regret this and I hope this is not taken the wrong way. But I think it is unrealistic to expect everyone that reads the report to say thanks every week. (Based on the Posts in here it seem obvious a lot of people do read it) I don't think modders (and certainly not mod tool writers http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ) get thanked everytime someone used their mod. Nor would I expect it. If you want to provide an useful survice to the form the keep doing the report. If it is just being done so you can get a dozen people to say 'thanks you are a great guy' then it's probably not going to happen. BTW I think you are a great guy for doing the report but I'm not going to say it every week.

I think that most people read it and never post.
I can sympatize with your feelings.
The Newbie Galactic Combat II story thread has you to thank for a lot.
Sometimes it seems that we are three authors and one reader(!)

The good thing is that we know that atleast the other authors always read what we've written.

This forum would benefit from a "view" count on each topic.
It would add to the incitament to do things such as the Lurk report and story threads (I hope...).

Somehow most of us want some appreciation of what we do, even though we might tell our selfs that we are doing these things for our own sake.

I think you are setting youself up for disappointment. You've said you want more response to the lurk report, but your audience is the very people who don't post replies -- lurkers.

I always felt the lurk report was a cool part of the forum, but I don't think your effort is going to produce your desired result.

Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol:- LRRP; pronounced as Lurp.

THE EARLY DAYS:

When the first major combat units were deployed to Vietnam in 1965 the Army found itself in a bit of a predicament. The war which it had become involved was not going to be like the warfare it had trained and equipped itself for; the terrain was nothing like Eastern Europe. This coupled with a jungle terrain, and an enemy that preferred guerrilla tactics as opposed to a stand up and fight set piece battle, meant that an effective means of locating him was required.

This need gave rise to the formation of small reconnaissance units of platoon size which were responsible to the Brigade or Divisional Commander. Two of the earliest examples of these "provisional" LuRRPs were formed by the 196th Inft Brigade and the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

David, mlmbd, here's a question for you.. What did you use to create your shipset? 3D Studio? Povray? Or something else? I used something else. I just can not get the hange of Povray. 3D Studio is way out of my price range. I would love to get a copy of it or Strata 3D Pro. I have come close a couple of times on ebay. I will keep looking. Here's what happened,.. I don't listen to sound while surfing the net and I always have headphones plugged in. (I don't use speakers, It's a personal preference!)

I was reading the report and after about a min, I thought oh yeah, the report has sound, I wonder what mlmbd has this week? I grabbed my headphones and held them up to my ear, What did I hear? you guessed it, that tiny little 'Grape vine' melody. I grinned and put the head phones down. I then posted my comment about it being the 'Grape vine' song. Once I read the replies, I went back and listened to it all, Good song, good music. My first thought then was Hey this isn't the grape vine song! ...listen a bit more,.. 1 min into the song +- Wham! the grape vine melody kicks in. I would like to apologize! There is not going to be a LURK REPORT this week. I got into a mess. As you all may know I was contemplating doing an all Shrapnel LURK REPORT. As well as the regular LURK REPORT. I can not do exacatly as I wanted because some of the Forums don't allow this or that. As to HTML and UBB. So, I need to spend an entire day doing the Mach up of how everything should or has to be. I will get it all straight. And the LURK REPORT will be back, same LURK Time, same LURK Channel. Next week.

Fyron, Digital signatures have been around for a long time,..

Here is a blatant example of a digital signature using my name..

In this example I used the RGB method of imbedding my name, the size of my name is 5 pixels and the colors of the pixels is defined by the ascii value of the letters in my name..

You can also do variations of the digital signature, by just using the 'R', 'G', or 'B' values (which would make your digital signature in shades of Red green or blue.)

In my tiny example, the more 'visible' sig has each pixel greatly enlarged in size. the Last 5 pixels in the bottom right of this small gif are the sig in actual size. as you can see, it's hard to make out visually when there is something bigger to draw your attention away from the sig. even if that something is just a bigger Version of the sig in an avatar frame.

Ed, I never said or implied that this form of digital signature was fool-proof, or counterfit proof, just that there were ways of imbedding a digital signature into bitmaps. (heck once the pic is converted into a 'loss-compression' format like .jpg there is a good chance that the signature would be fried.)

Just because something can be copied or tampered with doesn't make the original less valid. I could errase the name of 'Boris' from all of his paintings, but that wouldn't change the fact that the painting was done by Boris.
