Normally I'm not here right now, but I had to come home early today cause my kid was sick. She's the most unsick sick kid I've ever seen, but she had a little temperature and they don't like kids with temperatures at the daycare.
Anyway, it should be back up now.

I found I forgot to upload my turn after lunch. I went to the site and the lower portion filled in, but no buttons appeared on the top. I clicked my yellow game and got an error. Repeated several times (in different windows). It was acting slow. I once got the lower portion to show with a network error at the top. I finally got so most or all of the buttons showing at the top. Clicked on the game. Got the correct JavaScript, but the game page was very slow and did not completely fill in. I tried again and now I am getting Network errors. Tried to go to the main page to try text mode, but again got network error. It is fine to blame me, but I do not know what I did to make it go bad except maybe click on a link too fast.???

Guys, I'm sorry, I had no idea we were down until just now. It just needed a simple reboot to get it going again. Looks like all is working now.
I'm pretty wrapped up with school so I haven't been around here much lately and I only visit the PBW site about once a week unless I know we are having a problem. If we have another problem feel free to send an email to admin or me directly, or send me a Shrapnel PM.
I don't have this topic flagged to automatically notify me when someone responds because a lot of people like to use this thread for general questions and comments. That's not a problem, but it tends to fill my email box if I have it email me.
So feel free to shoot us or me an email if you notice the site is down and then post a message here telling everyone else you've emailed us so we don't get innundated.

an interesting stat would be monthly incidence of outage divided by category of cause
i would be interested in the following categories
1 down due to inet connection
2 down due to hardware fault
3 down due to power fault
4 down due to pbw server software fault
5 down due to pbw server operating system fault
i think this stat would be useful in showing us how important it is to contribute
plus it would indicate how severe a need for update is in each area compared to the other
just a thought somebody tell me th the thread where this message should go and i'll move it (that meaans delete and submit in correct thread)

I don't really keep records like I guess I should, but I'd estimate that recently #1 is about 4/5ths of the outages. And any time where it fixes itself before you see a comment from me, like this morning, you can be sure it was #1.
We haven't had an outage due to #2 in over a year. The other 1/5th would be divided among 3, 4 and 5, but sometiumes it's hard to pin down exactly. What looks like a software problem a lot of times can be caused by power glitches. We haven't had a software problem that required code changes or software reload to fix in quite a while though. The only ones we've had that I would even think of clasifying as a software problem were fixed with a reboot.
We probably need to add a couple more categories though.

The funny thing is we used to blame it on the Psycho Phong Cat whenever we had a problem we couldn't explain, but I didn't even have a cat. Which games are you in?

It appears that the server has not been processing email turns for about three weeks. I appologize if anyone tried to let me know about this. I don't remember getting a message about it. There was an email with some garbage in it causing it to hang. I'm not sure if that was related to the problem reported this morning, it may not be.
If you use the email turn submission and you get a bunch of replys this morning about not being able to process your turn, it's because it's going through all the old emails and getting caught up. There were several hundred sitting in the mail box.

The first thing to do whenever PBW throws an error like that is to try again in the other UI.
The graphic UI doesn't play well with browsers other than Internet Explorer. If you use something else, you'll probably get fewer errors with the text UI.

Every time I notice a posting here I've checked and the server was up and the ISP connection was working. Well I feel rather sheepish. I reset the power to the cable modem a couple times yesterday and each time it would go back down after a few minutes. I was getting a little frustrated and about to call the ISP when I thought about disconnecting and reconnecting the cable line to make sure that wasn't the problem.
Before I even gave the cable going into the back of the modem a quarter turn it fell out in my hand. It was so loose I'm suprised it didn't fall out while I was recycling the power all those times over the last few weeks.
We'll see how it goes. I would bet we see a big improvement in uptime. If it keeps going down though I'll get ahold of the cable guys.

Ok, the server is back up and on the network. During all the switching things around I've ended up with a new IP address. The request has been made to update the DNS for the seiv.pbw.cc URL. It may take a few hours to percolate through the system. In the mean time you should be able to reach the PBW site directly at http://69.81.92.3. Someone let me know if that doesn't work, please. Once the DNS updates you can go back to using the pbw.cc address.
Again, I'm leaving auto processing off for a couple days. If all turns are uploaded your turn will process, or the game owner can manually force a turn and it will run. But they won't run simply due to reaching their turn time limit.
Geoschmo
geoschmo
January 24th, 2007, 11:27 AM
Server is back up and running and the DNS is all updated, so you should be able to reach the site with the normal pbw.cc address.
We had another outage overnight which was more of the same problem I've been having with my isp connection, nothing to do with the new network hardware installed.
I've loaded a script on the server which checks periodically for connection loss and attempts to reset the modem if needed. This should greatly improve the reliability of the site. If you can't reach the site give it about 5 minutes and try again. If you still can't reach it then something else has happened that a simple reset won't fix, or my script isn't working.

No, it's fine. I was testing the script out. Since I put the script on there this morning it hadn't gone out once and I wanted to make sure that the script could actually handle an outage so I put the modem in standby. The script worked fine. So I think we are going to be ok.

I have added support for SE5 ver 1.25, including support for Balance mod ver 1.03, Golden Eclipse Mod ver 1.0 Beta, and Gritty Galaxy Public Mod beta. I haven't tested the Golden Eclipse and Gritty mods to verify they work with ver 1.25, these are the same versions of the mods that were available with 1.20.
Uprgading an exsisting stock games from 1.20 to 1.25 should work fine. There may be issues with mod games, consult the mod creator for more specific information in that regard.
There is still no way currently to upgrade a game on PBW from an older to a more recent version of a mod. For SE5 there is only one version of the mod pn PBW per version of SE5. In Se5 there is still no way to change the game type folder name being used in the game, so the only way to change the mod for a game is to change the files in the game type folder. Doing so on PBW will change the files for every game usign that mod. If you are playing an existing game of 1.20 with balance mod ver 1.01 and want to upgrade it to 1.25 you will have to upgrade to 1.25 with balance mod 1.03. There are reports that this is a problem. If you want to upgrade to 1.25 but remain on 1.01 of the mod you'll have to have the game owner run the turns offline.

While it is true that gmail often views PBW mail as spam, there does appear to be a problem with sending any emails right now. I think it's related to the IP change. My guess is the server we use for emails has a filter that only accepts emails from certain IP's. I'm investigating further. The server is recieving emails ok, it's only sending that seems to be not functioning.

For the DNS change, it's just a matter of the update percolating through the network; we have no control over how long that may take. (Although I'm surprised it hasn't sorted by now; I don't recall previous changes taking this long.)
I'm not one of the people working on the e-mail problem, so I can't give an estimate for that.

Hmm, that's a wierd one. I was not aware the code was doing any manipulation of the scheduled run time for daylight savings time, but I guess it makes sense. It might be in Java actually not in the PBW code Admiral wrote. I updated the time on the server but didn't update Java. Yes, it was actually only down for a couple minutes the other day at 5:30 am when you noticed the problem. The modem script we have on the server senses those outages and resets the modem. If you ever have trouble getting to the server, give it about five minutes and try again. Most of the time it will be back up by then. If not there is some other problem that I will have to handle directly.

I don't understand your faux German. Am I the only one with the problem or is everyone getting it?
Edit: Peculiar that it's almost been 24 hours and there are no legible responses one way or the other. I'd expect Geoschmo or someone to comment if it was down and if it isn't then I'd appreciate confirmation http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/confused.gif

Geo, can you make it so that it resets the turn time on all the games if it goes down?
ie if a game has 48hour turns, and PBW goes down, then when it goes back up the turn will be reset to annother 48 hours.
I keep having to replay turns because somone didn't make it in because PBW went down for a few hours, and the admin is pulling it back a turn.

I can put that on the list of suggestions. I'm not sure how complicated a change that would be though. It sounds kind of tough on the surface.

yeah it depends how it's coded.
it could be a peice of cake, or it could be complicated.
hey I just saw that you got ahold of admaral up there... was it him who made the Real Time Client? if so, does he still have the source? I'd like to have a shot at getting it to work for SEV if I can get ahold of it.

PBW seems to be suffering from some issues lately. What are the specific problems and is there anything the community can do to help get them fixed? Is it just an ISP issue or is it hardware?
PBW is very important to the game and I am surprised it is not officially funded/supported by Malfador/Strategy First. The volunteers have done a great job, but they shouldn't have to :-/

I don't think it's all that bad really. 5/4, 4/27, 4/14. That's not even once a week. It's not up to par with a site hosted at a professional server farm, but for an amatuer operation run on shoestrings out of my garage it's not bad.

Exactly, you guys are doing a great job. Im just curious what causes the outages?
geoschmo

It varies. The script I wrote is doing a pretty good job of resetting the cable modem if the ISP acts up. But occasionally the cable modem will lock up where the script can't access the modem to reset it and I have to power cycle it. And like any windows server it will lock up occasionally. I should probably be more proactive and do reboots every few days, but I tend to forget about it unless there is a problem. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

There has been long delays with installing mods or SE:V patches on PBW. Is it only up to you Geo to install these items? Can it be done remotely by another admin? Would that even be possible?
geoschmo

I get help on mods from Georgig and now Fyron. The new patches are a little more involved though so I prefer to do those myself at the server in case there is a problem.

It doesn't. It did last night, but it's back up now. The isp was offline when I got up this am. Most of the time when that happens the script I wrote for the server can reset it, this time it couldn't and I had to power cycle the modem.

doesn't seem to want to email out though. I processed a turn manually, and it completed but didn't send out the new turn. I also sent out a message for the game but that didn't go either. But that was about 2 hours ago. Haven't checked within the last hour-ish.

Ok, site is back up, but it does appear that autoprocessing is not working. I'm not sure what the problem is. You should be able to force the turns and they should run if all files get uploaded. I'm looking into why automatic processing isn't working.
