Default Shooting at helicopters

I have recently had problems shooting at helos during game play. My infantry units refuse to fire at them from any more than 150m. I can pull them up as targets for my infantry squads but %chance to hit=0. Also a group of M-113s got strafed at point blank range by a Hip-C and did not even fire a shot to defend themselves with their AAMGs. I don't understand!

Visiblity is clear, LOS is clear. Ammo is good, weapons are on. Supression is low. Squads are stationary. Helo is at low alt, but moved in the previous turn. I am playing DL 2.51.

The range of your infantry weapons isn't 150+ m, regardless of whether they can see the target or not? That'd be my guess. The M113 might've been supressed or at least initially by the speed of the helicopter, and then got suppressed? These are my initial theories.

helo speed and unit stabiliser, plus unit movement plays a part in the equation. Were the M113 armed with AAMG or with TMG?.

Rifles (or other infantry prime weapon class) have a max engagement range on flying helos of 2 or so hexes, LMG etc will probably only be able to engage a hovering helo, and if it then evades, it will probably have moved too far.

Cheers
Andy

M-113s were armed with AAMG, They were Israeli Bardelehas types. They had been moving previous turn in a loose column. The Hip-C apprached the rear vehicle and attacked from behind. A kill on the first salvo and proceed to destroy and immobilize the other two without either of them firing a shot. Possible? Sure. Likely? No, I am I a sore loser? ABSOLUTELY!

hmm - maybe the external AAMG got suppressed by the initial salvo or kill event? (were in the blast radius of the RP salvo). Firer failed his skill roll to engage the approaching helo? (which can be affected by current suppresion level). APC had no shots remianing? (and so would need a special skill throw to generate a reaction shot).

One reason I am partial to the autocannon weapon type - they can still pop off at passing helos while closed down, unlike external AAMG.

I am willing to chaulk it up to a lucky strike, this helo has now fallen victim to an excellent AA gunner, a decoration is in order.
