site summons; are they worth it?

I know magic sites with free summons are a nice novelty in SP, but are they really worth it in MP? Do I dispatch the mages from researching or battle duty to go do summons?

If you get something good, and have a cheap mage, then yes. Getting a bunch of Soulless probably isn't worth it, but if you get Devils or Banes or Fiends of Darkness, it's well worth it. Use some cheap-ish level 1 mage, like a summoned Revenant, and you're good to go.

a follow up: can more than one mage enter a site for free summons?

I'm near a dragon mount in my new MP game and I don't mind spending a vanherse or whatever to get a draconian each turn... not that my opinion is worth that much..
