Ok, great suggestions yall, thx. I will try to just summon up big batches of skeletons or vinemen, depending on path and gem availability.

While I am on the subject of poison tho, does anyone else think that the 50% resistance of Ctis is too weak? I find that even a weak poison (either from a cloud or a weapon) will kill a ctis footsoldier who has the 50% res. So why even bother having it at all?

Btw, the reason you see hydras rout is that they don't die very easily due to their high HP and regeneration. Anything else that took that damage would very likely be dead long ago already, pr at least crippled by afflictions. But they do take a lot of hits due to their size, and then rout since despite their high morale they are about to fail a few checks from all those hits that land. So, 4lvl priests, and hatchlings help to keep them in place.

If your pretender starts with 4 death this will allow you to find most sites which give death gems. Find two or three sites with +2 death gems and by the time your researchers reach the pale riders spell you'll be ready to cast the spell a few times. Also your blessed troops get a fear bonus.
Lots can also depend on luck... I've had games where after searching 50 territories I only had +9 death gems per turn.

Death magic is also important because it opens the doorway for you to enter the water territories more easily.

Enchantment 4 (or 5?), Nature 3(and 1 gem): Poison Ward.
50% more resistance to poison for all your troops on the battlefield. This stacks for C'tis - as long as you have Nature-3 mage with one nature gem with your armies you can stack all national C'tis units with all kinds of poison-critters.

50% resist does give them time, but it seems it most often it isn't worth the work needed to stack the casters with nature gems.
