The monkey nations' "Akarsita's death has brought him very close to the pretender god" (or something along those lines) is pretty close to the Buddhan enlightment concept AFAIK. Game-mechanics-wise, a chance of a commander's death increasing dominion (or him being reincarnated in another body) doesn't usually make that big of a difference.
