well the idea was to scout if you had spend insane amouts of cash on PD there too... which you did.
THe other idea was to
cast mistform (which they did)
then cast a few thunderstrikes (which they did) to kill the lonely troop that was there (if you didn't have PD)
and after 3-5 rounds before your troops could reach them (which they didn't in that time) RETREAT (which they didn't, DAMMIT) the last round, with your troops all around him.. he cast RESIST POISON...
WTF RESIST POISON???
