They are tourists, not spies! After a hard day's work in Marignon, they just want to see the sights, take some photos, have a few beers...is that so wrong???

Hey,
I finally got internet connection in my apartment just now! I am back up and running on my lovely desktop. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
Hopefully, things will be back to normal after all this craziness of driving across our beautiful country. Sometime this evening, I will send out a status mail for Turn 48. I also sent the Abysia turn to Cainehill again.
I did notice that I forgot to include a subject in my emails for Turn 48, which meant some of the email filters could have rejected it. Tuesday night, I had been sneaking around the apartment complex for a free connection, but everyone here has security enabled on their wireless routers. I eventually parked in front of the Comfort Inn in Springfield since I knew they had an unprotected wireless connection. So I did the turn emails in a huge hurry, and I am glad it mostly worked.
Anyway, look for a new proclamation sometime this week. I will be assisting one of our non-native-English speaking players in the wording a tight proposal. Pity the nation targeted! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Turn 49 has been sent. C'tis has staled again.
The wyrm duel was a complete bust:
1. King James summoned some imps.
2. Sak killed a couple of the imps.
3. The coward James promptly retreated.
I suppose this means that Sak was victorious since he stayed put, but it is difficult to say exactly what was won...
The next deadline in Sunday at 5 PM EST. If I do not hear from the staling C'tis soon, it will be time for a war proposal from Ronan.

I'm so embarrassed...
I entirely forgot about the "summoned creatures can make you rout, too" business.
If you look at the way I was equipped, and the other spells I would have cast, you would see that I intended to fight it out.
If Sak wishes to stay in the province one more turn, I will cede him the advantage of defense and attack next turn (with a new script).

I have fixed my email problems. It seems that the COX internet provider will NOT send an email message from a comcast.net account (it probably has something to do with being a competitor). Anyway, this means I now have another new email account.
I don't want to post it here because of all the bots searching forums for email addresses to send spam. But I will say that my account is the same name as my old one except change the '@comcast.net' to '@cox.net'.
Also, I will continue to receive all incoming mail from my comcast account for the indefinite future.

Okay, I will stay in Azimar in order to have a proper duel!
Unfortunately, being surrounded by all these heathen disbelievers has sapped some of my magic resistance, strength, and hit points. In fact, I have shrunk to a mere 120 hit points and will perhaps have even fewer by the time the battle starts, where King James, having retreated to a land of KingJamesWorshippers, might have around three times that!
Nonetheless, I am fearless and well prepared!

Turn 50 has been sent. No one staled.
The next deadline in Tuesday at 5 PM EST.
Sak of the Raptors got utterly crushed in the duel. Astral weapon and astral shield was everything that James needed. The astral shield paralyzed Sak and reduced his att/def to zero. The astral weapon then eliminated the protection with armor piercing. James was attacking against a totally defenseless wyrm. Such a slaughter indeed!
Unfortunately for him, Sak did not have a power spell like W9 frozen heart to counteract the astral spells.
Even had both wryms started with the same HPs (see zooko post above), it still would have been no contest.
Zooko
February 20th, 2006, 03:02 PM
Ouch. I guess I was hoping Sak would summon Lesser Earth Elementals or something. Astral Shield paralysis is negated by Magic Resistance, right? So while extra hit points wouldn't have helped, extra magic resistance might have?
Zooko
February 20th, 2006, 03:13 PM
Oh, I see that he did summon lesser elementals.
Also I see that both wyrms were equally penalized on Magic Resistance for being in enemy dominion.
The Panther
February 20th, 2006, 03:17 PM
Sak did summon both earth and water elementals, but they were no match for the etheral and lucky King James. Only one of the elementals got in a hit (doing minor damage) before dying.
And yes, magic resistance does reduce the chance of paralyze from the astral shield.
Also, Sak built up his protection all the way to 27 with earth magic just to have the astral weapon negate it. This is another indication showing how defense is far superior to protection.
Cainehill
February 20th, 2006, 03:26 PM
I had thought that fatigue recovery might allow Sak to prevail, but the decided lack of spell casting AI post-turn 5 also contributed to his death. (Earth Meld? Slime? Sheesh - it's why I would've gone melee after 5.)
I'd counter Panther's statement though - defense is superior to protection mostly in wyrmo-a-wyrmo, 1 on 1 battles, and even then only if you have the ability to overcome the protection.
Much lengthier battle this time though.

Zooko
February 20th, 2006, 04:07 PM

I don't have time for a turn-by-turn write-up of the duel, but it went like this:
Sak: 120 hp, 9W6E, horror helm, girdle of might, bracers of prot
King James: 300hp, 3E3S2B, 2xgore helmet, lucky pendant, ring of cold prot
- Sak cast quickness (no surprise), then some stuff, then reeled off 2 lesser earth elementals and 3 lesser water elementals (it was the AI that cast 4 of those, believe it or not); after that, the AI cast the usual junk-slime, etc.
- King James went with body ethereal, astral shield and weapon, the earth strength thing, then horror mark (because wyrms can be petty)
King James tore through the 5 elementals and went for Sak. It only took a few turns. Had the hit points been as they were for the first duel, before Sak spent a turn in Vyrmin's dominion (Sak had 200 hp before), it would have only taken a few turns longer. KJ was still close to 300 hp when Sak died.
I brainstormed with a friend (who is a much better optimizer than me) about the duel and we figured that since (a) wyrms have so many hit points, and (b) the AI never chooses spells well, hand-to-hand was the only way to go. Thus, the astral fighting wyrm--with doubled attacks, thanks to the 2 gore helmets.
The first time around, the imps were just meant to disrupt Sak's script while I cast the rest of my spells.
Vyrmin, KJ is leaving your province. We lowered taxes on the way out, so you may not even have any unrest.

Atm. I'm self-employed and I'll have to undergo some minor surgery soon. Ambulant, I hope. Nevertheless, my working shedule is already messed up, and I can't simple take a sick-leave from several projects I'm committed to.
As you may have noticed, I already had some stale turns, either from being unable to do the turn in time because of acute pain attack or being under pain killers, or because I was simply still doing some serious work which got delayed.
Especially unfortunate is the fact that writing all the diplomatic messages I intended to send around turns out to be real hard work which I can't bear atm.. You may have noticed English isn't my first language, and to write elaborate treatises, carefully worded diplomatic messages or simply role-playing on the wiki board is not that easy for me.
Again, I'm sorry. But the only alternative would be to turn the nation over to the AI, which I'm reluctant to do because this tends to ruin the game for the emidiate neighbours in one or the other way.

Perhaps, to increase the odds someone would be willing to jump in, we should propose an amendment to the Wyrm's charter granting Full Dragon Suffrage, to wit:
Proposition XX: The right of the citizens of Orania to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the Council or by any Wyrm on account of dragonhood.
That way, any sub would get the full, wyrmalicious experience of bickering about arcane rules and propsition sub-clauses that we Wyrms so enjoy.

But the MP is a word of great temptation as well - I hate to think of it being given to a player, as they can then look at all nations turns. (Possibly not so big a deal with pbem, not having access to all turn files.)

Yup, any player with the Master Password should not get any other .trn file. A slightly more drastic approach would be to systematically send individual mails to all players, so that nobody has access to any other .trn file (that would prevent a "hey nice replacing player, care to tell me that Master Password?" situation). So long as it *isn't* TCP/IP, the Master Password can be used to "recover" lost problems; in TCP/IP, it won't do much good, unless TCP/IP servers create logs somewhere.
There should be other ways to work around the problem (getting the files from FTP/HTTP, say), but the basic principle remains the same. Not that it will be necessary this time around.

Actually, according to the main page, there are two dead Wyrms, making 14 possible votes; apparently there were seven votes by the deadline, making quorum.

There are 17 races in the game.
There is 1 dragon with no vote.
There are/were 2 Wyrms listed as being dead during the voting on Proposition 31.
This leaves 14 eligible Wyrms. The quorum rules state that at least 50% of these must vote. 7 votes were cast before the first 24-hour period expired. I therefore ruled that the proposition passed.
The only problem I can see is if one of the dead Wyrms (Sak or Oothoon) is back from the dead and has neglected to tell us.

A note to Kir'Doq of T'ien Ch'i: You had better get your proposition posted up soon for me to keep my side of the vote trading bargain before I lose the power to vote by being rogue.

There is no possibility of Ronan stopping the Wrathful Skies + Living Air attacks. Heck, I don't even have an answer to the three Harvester of Sorrows. Especially since I am not past level 5 in any magic school.

Wait, no... I've got three of them, and they've been sitting in my land for the whole game until Pangaea and I went to war. Since then, they've been fighting Pangaea. Definitely not a confession.
I've never sent a single hostile unit into another Wyrm's territory, except for Pangaea (and I'm saying this out-of-character). No stealthy preaching, no assassins, no hidden armies, nobody who spreads disease... Nothing. I don't know who's been infecting your folks, but it wasn't me.
And I just realized that it was Cainehill complaining, not djo! I'm a bit confused, but I guess djo was misinterpreting my message as a confession to Cainehill... Actually, I was thinking of giving the fatherland file to Ygorl and let him take over hosting since I will soon be reduced to fighting a losing guerilla war and may be not be long for the world.

Indeed we did.
Our nation has not seen unexpected disease, nor do we care to. Whilst our own denials of undertakings of covert operations against our neighbors may lack some credibility at this point, we will merely note that as our chosen dominion suggests (Diabolical Faith), we have not pursued the necromantic technology to summon Harvesters. In the old days when everyone always took 2-3 misfortune, baleful star was no big deal. But with the CB mods, people are taking luck frequently. In my opinion, this is why it has become a pretty good spell (especially against a luck-3 nation). I have used it recently in some games too.

Likely within the next few months, we will be changing hosts when Pangaea is permanently vanquished. Ronan's latest proposition will pass this evening when the 2 day time limit expires, regardless of any additional votes cast or not cast.

Turn 66 has been sent.
After losing the earlier duel to King James, Sak of Caelum has injested so much silicon (in order to buff his body) that the computer has officially taken over his brain.
In the first act as a machine, Sak entered the Death Match where he won the match but was blinded by a minor fire sage in the process. Sak then refused to collect the Trident prize, dangerously insulting the God Neptune in the process.
Per Council rules and by direction from Neptune, Sak is now a rogue nation.
Also, now that Ygorl has reneged on his promise to host, I need for someone (anyone) to take over the hosting of this game. Ronan has determined that the centaurs refuse to be led by a wrym, so like Sak of the Raptors, Ronan too will soon become rogue. An interested party should please contact Ronan's spokesperson (The Panther) about collecting the fatherland file for the game.
Ronan did finally reach a major milestone this very month. EVERY SINGLE UNPROTECTED MAN TEMPLE has been burned to the ground. Approximately 20 temples (representing a huge investment of around 2000 gold pieces) have been destroyed by forces loyal to Ronan in the past few months. With this momumental achievement, Ronan can now retire in peace.

Um, when did I "renege on my promise to host"?
I'm somewhat offended/pissed off: First of all I didn't renege on anything (I just said that I was too busy to host when you offered a while back but also said that you didn't mind hosting until you're dead). Second, you didn't even acknowledge receiving the nice semi-automatic hosting script I sent you (which would work if you have a Mac, which I thought you did); maybe you never got it, though, so perhaps it's not fair for me to be upset about that.
Anyway, I'd be much happier if you'd keep the hurling of feces confined to within the game. I've already said that my lack of time to engage in the diplomacy that I'd need (thanks to you, incidentally but irrelevantly) has made it not much fun for me. I don't need this outside-of-game garbage on top of that.
Sorry if I'm overreacting. I'm just very annoyed, and I don't have time to sit and consider whether my reaction and words are justified.

Ah, my apologies. I thought your statement about being too busy to host plus the fact that you are looking for a permanent sub in the game meant you were not planning on hosting permanently. If I misintrepreted your intention, that is not at all surprising (given the difficulties of communicating by writing).
All this diplomacy does indeed take much time, which I have been quite short of lately. Once I am eliminated in COW and the Yarnspinners game ends, I will be down to one game, (which is just about right now for me). And it is just a game anyway. I wonder when Dom 3 will come out... (Shhhh, quiet Panther) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
I did receive the script and I messed around with it a bit, but I never did figure out how to use it (or even open it). I finally decided that I was computer illiterate and didn't have a clue about what to do. I had completely forgotten all about it until you mentioned it above. At least now I know I am not quite as lost as I had feared since it only works on a Mac (which I do not have).

And speaking of diplomacy and time...I would like to apologize for my own somewhat dysfunctional play recently. In particular, I owe Zooko an apology. For the last many, many turns, I've been making his/Sak's/Caelum's life fairly unpleasant with a continuous flood of spies and stealthy preachers. My intention was to petition for war a long time ago, but things just kept...happening. I didn't think it'd be sporting to do anything before the duel was decided (a masterful play on his part, I think). Then I didn't think I'd get votes when Sak was dead (due to sympathy). And I have to do some traveling soon (but I don't know exactly when), and I didn't want to start a war and then have to stale in the middle of it.
So, apologies for my relative disengagement, and for my not terribly sporting "cold war" with Zooko.

Oh, I really didn't mind the Cold War. Patrolling for spies was the most fun I've had this last year or so.
However, I'm slightly angry that you never attacked me!

And I'm ... flooding pissed that you didn't announce that you were going AI. Your post saying "I declare war on everyone" was taken as a joke (especially since it WASNT on the official CoW wiki, and you can't declare war without a council vote). Cheesy, piss poor gamemanship - you could have at least posted, "I haven't found a replacement so I'm going AI next turn".

Puffyn, I just sent you the script.
Other folks are welcome to ask for it as well, but I'm planning on getting it cleaned up (and making another script or two to go with it, to make a whole dom2 hosting suite) and posting it generally when I've got a bit more time.
I don't mind hosting, whether or not I find a replacement. I did commit to doing it, after all... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Besides, it would only take maybe 20 minutes per week, tops, and that I can definitely find time for. On the other hand, I definitely don't mind *not* hosting, so if puffyn wants to (say, if he's so enamoured of my script that he can't wait to use it) I'd be happy to turn over the responsibility before I even get it...

The PBEM stuff is all AppleScript (though it does make some calls to bash). The code that maintains the TCP/IP server is a bash script:
<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>
#!/bin/bash
dom2up=$(ps -xc | grep dominions2)
if [ ${#dom2up} = 0 ]; then
cd ~/Desktop/Dominions\ II/dominions2.app/Contents/Resources/
../MacOS/dominions2 -T -S --port 2247 -q --hours 120 -M conceptbalance_pretenders_5_2.dm (no linebreak)
-M heroes1_2.dm --postexec ~/dominions2/RAND2posthost.app RAND2
fi
</pre><hr />
that is run every minute by cron. If the server dies, it pops right back up (Weeble-like). There's probably a simple elegant way to account for more than one instance of dom2 (which I am presently not doing) but since I'm only running one game I didn't bother.
The PBEM scripts are, not surprisingly, much more involved.

I'd be willing to host. I'd love to get a copy of Ygorl's script (I also have a Mac) to make the process easier.
There is also some stuff you can do with the Mac OS "automator" to make hosting PBEM easier (e.g., creating & addressing emails, attaching turn files and backing up the game as a zip each turn... all with very few clicks). I think Applescript is more powerful, but I don't know how to write Applescripts. Maybe someday. (I saw a book last weekend called "Applescript for Dummies" and almost bought it.)

Given that the CoW game started with CB 5.1 and always required it, I'd say the question was "what did you do to delete your mods and why". (Given that you also seem to have lost the 5.2 that you used to have for the CoA game.)

It'd be _real_ nice if people could get a return receipt in the PBEM games.
This certainly stands as a nice counterpoint to our old debate about whether pbem games are better than server games : with a server game, a player can make sure that his turn has been uploaded / received.

I am willing to rehost last turn since there were three emails who did not get through. I still have yet to receive even one of the three lost emails. Also, Pasha has been having big problems too, and several of his emails have been lost lately.
One caveat - All three of you must NOT change your missing turn because you have now seen the result of the latest turn.
And yes, Cainehill, I do have to agree with you that this is a counter to my argument in favor of PBEM vs server.
So, please send me your lost turns and I will rehost tomorrow.
Finally, I am turning hosting over to Ygorl this weekend. Hopefully his email server will do better than mine has been doing lately.

What happens if the proposition fails? Will Ermor be rouge, or do you plan to work out a private compensation deal?
Ygorl
April 23rd, 2006, 12:33 PM
I don't know why Folket hasn't said anything... I was wavering between puting up the proposition and just contacting him in private; in the end, this seemed like the more interesting route, and so I took it. It doesn't seem to have worked out as planned, however... It's not interesting if nobody votes or discusses or anything! Ah well... Wyrms are a fickle bunch, eh?
Or maybe, perhaps, their motivating spirits are just busy for the weekend.
If it doesn't pass? I don't know. I hadn't really considered that part. I'd hate to drive someone rogue over a mis-reading of a proposition... I guess I'd first try the same deal, but just between me and Folket, without the public show and the bribes to y'all. Maybe that's what I should have done in the first place, but this way seemed more in the spirit of the game.
Ygorl
April 24th, 2006, 12:36 AM
I'm still missing files from Abysia, C'tis, Ermor, and T'ien Ch'i. Given Panther's email problem, it's quite possible that they sent files that simply never reached him. Since that would mean a delay until Monday at least, anyway, I figure we'll just push the hosting until Tuesday.
Two other small things that'll be slightly different:
One, I often don't get home at night until well after five. The deadline will be 8 pm EDT, and I'll try to get the turns out right at that time. Two, it's considerably easier for me if you don't compress your .2h files in any way - just attach them as the raw .2h files. If we start to get a lot of corrupt .2h files as a result (I don't know if this is ever a problem? Anyone with more experience care to chime in?) I'll change this policy, but for now let's give it a shot (unless people tell me that it is a big problem... I doubt it, though, since I know I and many others have been sending .2h files without incident). Every file you send is validated by the game engine as soon as I receive it, and you'll get an email if there's a problem, so it's not the case that corruption will appear unnoticed until later.
Thanks, everyone!
PashaDawg
April 24th, 2006, 01:37 PM
When I hosted the original PBEM RAND game, it was extremely rare that .2h files would get corrupted, and it was a huge pain if files were sent as zips. "Raw" files are the best way to go.

Suspect that if you look into your CoW directory you'll see that's the case - either move the file manually, or unzip into domionions2 vice dominions2/CoW.
