The main problem is the "luck" factor.

How many time i could swear the enemy AI had some built-in advantages when a very cheap entrenched AI squad could kill any of my expensive assault troops...

And when you script a mage, you should always remember there is a chance the mage AI will think it is smarter than you and it will cast spells that are not what you scripted, even if you are in range...

I can't say exactly as i have not looked at the stats in that time, but judging from the Magic Resistance 16 and as it was on a province with a strong dominion from my pretender, i think it used mine.
