Download the Mega-age mod here: http://67.66.187.69/dominions3/mega-age.zip

You will need to extract these files/folders to your dominions3/mods folder. You will then be able to enable/disable the mod via the dom3 game menu > Preferences. You do not need to enable this mod to upload pretenders.

This info has also been posted to the first post in this thread.

Say - been an insane week, wrecked my new car and things went downhill from there. If I can still get in, I can have a good pretender in sometime Sunday, or .... a pretender in Saturday?

Currently we are full... but if someone drops or disappears before the game starts I can let you take over their spot.

He was snuffed in Manaburn. Isn't Abysia supposed to be weak?

Yes, yes, I know. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smirk.gif

That's basicly the ultimate compliment, when people brag about winning a game against you. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

I (and I'm guessing Jurri too) avoided this game both because it's bound to be a total micromangement nightmare for people who really like to optimize, and because the unit limit is likely to mess it up.

I guess the key is to make as many units as quickly as possible.

If you read back a few pages we have reason to believe the limit might not exist anymore or has been raised. Specifically we have game logs showing more than 136K troops existing in the world - much more than the 100K limit everyone says there is.

The only way we will know for sure is to try...

I was just teasing http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Besides, the race I'm playing can't possibly outstrip Emor.

I'm curious though, I wonder if it'd be a viable strategy for them to simply sit and summon as many skeletons until the game hits its limit with the addition of their freespawn. Then every turn they could try to summon as many longdead as possible to replace what others have lost.

Just a question pertaining to the new nations in 3.08, are there are banners for them? Just curious, looking at the streamers and standards mod I don't see icons for them (Tir na n'Og and Eriu). Not that I am either nation but noticed them missing when I viewed the preview image in the mod.

And this game will certainly be interesting.

Nope - they will just have to make due with their original banners. Everyone should still be unique though.

BTW Zepath created those flags/standards for his own mod.... so a big "thank you" goes out to him (whoever he is)!

Hi -- dumb question -- where do I put the mod files to get them to load. I've tried what I thought were the obvious places (map folder, main folder, main folder in a folder titled 'mods' that I created). No dice. I'm on a mac 10.4.8.

Thanks

Velusion
May 12th, 2007, 07:15 PM
Extract the files and folders from the .zip file to the "mods" folder under the dominions3 folder. Make sure and leave the directory structure intact. At that point you should be able to go under prefernces > Mods and enable/disable it.

So your mods folder should have the .dm file and two folders after the extraction.

That's the thing. My Dom3 folder doesn't have one.

On a mac it's an application icon that you can "open" as a folder by ctrl-clicking. Inside the Dom3 folder/app is a folder marked "contents". Inside that is "resources" where the maps folder lives, and two other folders: "MacOS", which only has the actual Dom3 app in it, and "Frameworks" which has SDL stuff.

I assume I should create a folder called mods, but I don't know where to put it. The few places I've tried don't make them available.

Thanks.

Any chance we get to see the .map file ahead of the game start? Might do some tweaking with my build depending on things relevant to the map.

Nope! The only person that got to look at that was DrP when he was setting things up. The rest of us get to discover it all as we go http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.

DrPraetorious

I did give in to temptation and look at my own start location, I'm afraid - I had to look at the undocumented ones (Lanka, Eriu, Tir) to make sure I had the nation #s right - but I can't remember where they were - and that the map file loaded correctly with the mod (it does.) Other than that I have no idea, and I uploaded my pretender before I generated the map, so it can't have influenced my decisions (I took more productivity than I'm going to need.)

Some general facts -
* Every land start has at least three land neighbors, not counting swamp or wasteland. Most have more.

* Every sea start has at least three sea neighbors.

* There are at least three provinces between every pair of start locations.

* Nations with an amphibious or maritime component (unless I missed one) were guaranteed coastal start positions (there were more than enough to go around.) The coastal starts still have plenty of land neighbors.

Coastal may mean next-to-a-single-province-lake, or right on the ocean. Script doesn't care and I didn't check.

Other than that, I handed out positions in the order in which they were seeded, which is close enough to random.

Evilhomer
May 12th, 2007, 10:10 PM
number of land provinces vs water provinces ? are the water provinces connected ?

Velusion
May 12th, 2007, 10:36 PM
842 land 158 water. All the large bodies of water are connected.

DrPraetorious
May 13th, 2007, 03:11 AM
Okay, I count four oceans (southeast, north-central, southwest, and small northwest, roughly.)

Southeast : 3
Southwest : 2
North-central : 2

So that ocean in the upper-left-hand-corner has no starts. Other than that, each body of water has at least 2, and yes, they are connected to eachother anyway.

Fortuantely I'm so drunk that i don't need to remember accidentally remembering exact province numbers deom what I just checked. Woo! FREEBIRD!

Gandalf Parker
May 14th, 2007, 01:48 PM
For DnD gamers I used to tell them to take their full name, write it out, break it into syllables and rearrange them. You get a pronouncable name that is not you but still kindof you. In fact mine came up with names that felt right to different classes and Ive used them for decades.

For this game you might also include the name of the pretender, the nation, any favorite tv characters. But the key is scrambling the pieces. So Gandalf, Pangaea, Lord of the Wild, might give me Gandaea, Pandalf, Gandwild, Gangaea, Lorndalf, Lorild, Longwild.

With the list of non-provided pretenders, and a countdown going on, maybe some of the wannabe subs might go ahead and create some pretenders for the game and provide them in order to slip in at the last minute.

Tichy

Game status page is here:
http://67.66.187.69/dominions3/stats.php?game=perpetuality

FYI The first turn will show lots of "missed orders" results. You can just ignore those until the second turn. I'm also not sure why it shoes "Early" era - but that isn't important.

Also - keep in mind that sometimes this page gets messed up. Go by the status in the GAME for the true due date/results.

Finally I marked it as a standard victory condition rather than a provinces. This is is so the provinces graph will be useful. The victory condition will still be 650 provinces or the resignation of all other players.

I can manually tell how many provinces every person has exactly through the scores file.

It looks great! And works great! Thanks for going to all the work of setting this up.

Is there any chance you can put up the current scores.html on your site too? It's a lot easier to look at scores.html for the current numbers. The in-game graphs are great for trends, but to be able to read values for a specific nation early on, we'll probably have to disable-click at least 50 nations to get something legible.

P.S. You will need to have the Mega-Age mod expanded to your mod folder and enabled before you play.

Actually just expanded. You only need to enable a mod in order to create a game with it.

If you are playing multiple games and they all use different mods then you dont need to turn them on and off each time you switch games. When you open a game that was created with a mod, then game will enable it while you are doing your turn.

But it does have to be unpacked in your mod directory so the game can turn it on during your move.

I think it gets that from the first part of the .2h file names. You might be able to add an "if Perpetuality" line.

Works like a charm. And seeing the line-up of 62 nations in the setup screen is a grand sight. Congrats to Velusion and the other people making this possible, a game this large is not a small feat.

I have a problem: after choosing my nation I got the following error-message: "myloadmalloc: can't open ./mod/./sns3/ea_arco_icon.tga" although I downloaded the mod and enabled it. (doesn't work when I disable it either)

atul
May 16th, 2007, 01:04 PM
What's your operating system? Of course you can go to the mod folder and check whether you have the ea_arco_icon.tga in the sns3 folder. Does the mod work if you make a game of your own?

Gandalf Parker
May 16th, 2007, 01:05 PM
Wait for the scoreboard after the first turn processes. Seeing the weave of colors on the provinces or armies screen is really cool. Kindof like this
http://www.dom3minions.com/games/Armageddon/Armageddon.JPG
altho some improvements have been made in the display since that was taken.

The real headache of a game this big is that you have to manually create the game by the host "joining" as each of the nations. Thats the part that I dread.

Velusion
May 16th, 2007, 01:13 PM
Make sure you have an snes folder under the mods folder and that hte snes folder has lots of .tga files in it!

solo
May 16th, 2007, 01:13 PM
Sounds like the nation icons are not in the correct place.

The file downloaded with the mod should be extracted to your dominions3 mods folder. Afterwards, the mods folder should contain the mod itself, Mega-Age.dm, plus two new folders, the Mega folder, which contains the megabanner and the sens folder, which contains all of the nations' banner info, one of which is the ea_arco_icon.tga

These folders are probably not in the right place.

I am having trouble w/ the server.

I get to the getting info screen (The first screen after the you give the server port) and it seems to freeze. I wait about 4 mins and I get a Nagot Gick Fel! cannection to server was broken. What is the deal?

I am using 67.66.187.69 15151. Is it my firewall? How long should the wait be on the getting info screen?

Velusion
May 16th, 2007, 04:13 PM
It probably is your firewall. It should connect in less than 30 seconds (usually less than 10). Opening up port 15151 on the firewall should do it...

If it is a software firewall, as a quick test you could disable it completely and just see if you can connect. if you can then you can fiddle with it more.

If it is a hardware firewall you will have to get into the device and configure it to allow port 15151 access.

The purpose of the middle coalition is to protect players in stuck in the middle of the map from being quickly crushed by simultaneous attacks from players on the edges or adjacent to water.

It will be defensive in nature. Members will pledge not to attack each other and to provide mutual support if any other member is attacked.

There are no fees and no newsletter, but if members want to tax and trade for mutual benefit, we should certainly discuss it. We might makeup tshirts, membership cards, group health insurance rates and/or hats should the situation warrant http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Actually - you guys should really worry about the rush-bless nations before us. LA Ermor and LA R'lyeh take awhile to "mature" - you usually don't have much to worry about them in the early game.

However the uber-bless nations are going to dominate everyone else (including LA Ermor and LA R'lyeh) quickly and completely. They are the ones that will own you before you even get a chance to get started.

Ok, here ya go.

You'll need:
approximately 1/2 lb of chicken breast-meat (white meat)
1 lemon (but get 2, they're cheap)
a pepper grinder
1 ripe avocado
atleast 2 cloves crushed garlic
1/4 lb pine nuts
1 large Portabella mushroom
1 lb pasta (this recipe will feed yourself and a date you want to impress)
olive oil, peanut oil, sesame oil-you can get away with one type of oil here
dried red pepper flakes-to taste, but don't overdo it
Worshershire sauce (Lea and Perrins is the best, but just use what you have)
a solid hunk of Parmezan cheese
1 stick of butter-preferrably unsalted, high quality butter-you can use the cheaper stuff, but the sauce WILL be greasier.
Heavy cream (or whipping cream-no, not the stuff that comes in a cannister and goes on banana splits or a kinky person, I mean the stuff that is sold by the pint and you put it in your coffee)

Take the chicken, cut it up into strips and marinate it in lemon juice-use half a lemon, fresh ground pepper, and crushed garlic, set it aside 1 hour before you put the pasta on.

Take your pine nuts and rinse them off under cold water, place them on a paper towel and use another paper towel to pat them dry 30 minutes before the pasta.

Cut up a portabella mushroom (also into thin strips) and put it into a bowl. Marinate it in a tablespoon of olive oil, more crushed garlic, dried red pepper flakes, a few drops of Worshershire sauce, and a little lemon juice. Put it in the fridge 30 minutes before the pasta.

Cut an avocado into strips and squeeze the lemon over it, set it aside in a bowl in the fridge 15 minutes before the pasta.

15 minutes before you cook the pasta, heat up a frying pan (on medium-high heat) for 5 minutes and then add a tablespoon of olive oil and the chicken. Cook the chicken for 10 minutes, stirring regularly. After 10 minutes of cooking, turn the heat off and put the chicken in a microwave bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic-wrap and microwave it for 1 minute on high heat (just to make sure this recipe doesn't kill anyone with salmonella or e-coli). Clean the frying pan out with cold water and paper towels (be careful not to burn yourself).

For the Alfredo sauce, you're going to want a solid block of Parmesan cheese. The grated stuff you buy in a can won't really cut it. The quality of the cheese does matter, but that's a matter of taste and experience choosing the right one. I personally like a nice American cheese that's been aged 6 months or so, just because the older, better cheeses tend to be very dry, which I don't like as well in the sauce, and they're like twice as expensive-this dish is expensive enough as it is.

Grate the cheese up and have it ready before you put the pasta on. The sauce is simple, just melt unsalted butter-Land 'o lakes is good-over low heat until it's completely melted and then add heavy cream-for the best cream for the recipe, check the back and choose the one with the most fat content.

When you add the cream, MAKE SURE to take the butter OFF the heat and add the cream slooooowly. Too much heat makes the cream angry and it will clot. That's bad. Heat the butter and the cream over LOW heat-halfway between off and medium-and add the grated cheese right after you've added the cream. Cook it-stirring regularly-for 5 minutes. After that, put the water for the pasta on to boil-at a guess, you want around half a gallon of water for a pound of pasta, but read the directions on the box-and turn the heat down to low-the first or second notch above off-and stir it occasionally with a fork.

You can use pretty much any pasta you want, but I encourage either the traditional fettucinni or a nice tri-color rotini. Cook it according to the directions on the box. When it's done, drain it and place it in a large salad-bowl.

While the pasta is cooking, place the pine nuts in a frying pan with a teaspoon of sesame oil and a teaspoon of peanut oil. Saute them on medium heat, stirring constantly, until they start to darken slightly in color. Take the pine nuts out (carefully-they'll be hot) and put them on a paper towel to dry.

Put the pan back on the heat and heat it on high heat for 3 minutes exactly.
Add the portabella mushrooms (don't add any liquid) and 1 tablespoon of butter at the same time. Heat for 2 minutes more, and then turn the heat completely off. Don't stir the mushrooms at all, just make sure they're well distributed across the surface of the pan, and leave them on the burner. This should intensify the flavor and make the mushrooms somewhat dry.

When you put the pasta in the bowl, pour the sauce over the pasta and mix together until the pasta is well-incorporated with the sauce. Arrange the chicken, avocado, Portabella mushroom, and pine nuts over the top in as artistic a way as you feel (but do it quickly so the pasta doesn't go cold) and serve-preferrably with wine, to a date.

Disclaimer: don't ever engage in any activity that may result in the following: burning yourself, cutting yourself, poisoning yourself, setting your hair on fire, poisoning others, spreading disease, or sueing me.

Whadaya mean "working on"? You put your starting giants into a pile, and run screaming into an adjacent forest province (no risk of barbarians.) There, done.

A huge game like this does not favor the timid! Of those willing to risk all, half will be eliminated and half will rise to great power. Of those who play conservatively, none will be powerful enough to challenge them.

On the subject of HP Lovecraft and Spam:
The game needs a Worm that Walks (the soul of the devil bought hastens not from his charnel clay and so forth.)
Common summon or national summon? For who?
Epic hero!?
Should it be a mummification duplicate (i.e. you get a dead hero back as a Worm that Walks?)

I did the 'scout attack and retreat' manuever on turn 1. I got no scout/spy reports, but the indies in the province I 'attacked' were normal. (Mix of LI, HI, Xbows)

I backed up the game and then processed the turn. I logged in and checked and I could see everything as is should be. I then restored back to the original game.

So my assumption is if we stick it out this turn, things will get back to normal.

Now, as more and more people submit turns I'll be be backing up the server and checking to make sure it isn't a specific player or something strange. But as it stands now, I think things will get back to normal after this turn.

Unless you are very confident I suggest you play conservatively this one turn.

Sounds like, despite the supposedly increased max number of units and all, the bug from Dom2 remains where, when there are too many units in the world, reports on neighboring provinces and provinces where you have scouts get unreliable.

Used to see the bug commonly in mid-game on Faerun map games (circa 400-some provinces), and sounds like 1000 provinces and 62 nations causes the bug on turn 2.

I'm not sure about this... I've tested out and played a lot of single player over these last couple weeks with 61 AI players (well over 50 turns) and never seen this happen. Also, reports were not "unreliable" but completely non-existent. It also wouldn't explain the missing battle reports.

I'm not ruling out a bug - but I'd put my money on some kind of corruption file mis/match from last turn instead.
