I'd rather place the fetish on a scout and have him pass the gems to the mage... no reason for my mages in battle to be picking up random afflictions from disease like chestwound or feeblemind.

Also why place the fetish on a black sorceror when it can be placed on a sorceress who's cheaper and would also not die.
