Hmm...500th post! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Oh yes...Must keep memory together. Some sort of way of detecting pools/sinkholes and determining their alignment.

Been thinking about a 'Pool/Sinkhole Specialist' class and this is what I have so far:

Same as cleric, except: No domain spells, no turn/rebuke, no spontanious healing spells. Instead, two powers: Imbue Item and Create Pool/Sinkhole. Casting stat would still be Wis.

Imbue Item:
Would require a small item, typically an amulet. The item would allow the wearer to automatically succeed on any will check who's DC is less than 9 + Creator's Will save. Cost to be determined.

Model the ability after the Contingency Spell (srd.pbemnexus.com/spellsC.html#contingency) and it should work out pretty well; basically permitting the specialist to prepare a way to take 10 on a Will Save at a later date, as long as it doesn't take too long, using a focus of, say, a small diamond worth 50 gp.
narf poit chez BOOM said:

Create Pool/Sinkhole:
Levels 5/10/15/20, Tiny/Small/Medium/Large, requires 3-5 consecutive Wis checks vs. 18/20/22/24, an expenditure of time equal to 5/15/30/50 weeks and some sort of cost. Not sure gp would be the best cost here. Would provide a moral bonus to simaliar alignments and a caster level check bonus to the creator. Larger ones would provide larger and prehaps more bonuses (Caster level bonus to those of same alignment?).

Make it a magic item with pre-requisits, made using the same mechanics; a small pool/sinkhole would require, say, Class Level 2*Bonus, 1000 exp*Bonus^2, 25,000 gp * Bonus^2 to build, and have a market price of 50,000*Bonus^2, for a bonus to caster level for pool/sinkhole specialists; much beyond that, and it gets rather unbalancing as your class mage is casting lower-level spells for insane amounts of effect - at level 3, a character could create such an item (barely) that gives +1 to caster level - getting an effective caster level of 4. Alternately, the item could be single-use (for one spell) and cost much less. Still a very good idea to put an EXP cost on it, however.
narf poit chez BOOM said:

I have some ideas for refining it; I'm just looking for a few suggestions. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Such as, are the numbers about right? I mostly just pulled them out of a hat. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Was thinking, maybe some other sort of ability, too, like allowing a wizard/sorcerer spell to be substituted for a cleric spell every level.

The mechanics are decidedly different; divine spellcasters (such as a clerics, druids, paladins, or rangers) can prepare and cast any spells on their class (or domain) list; arcane spellcasters can prepare and cast any spells on their personal list. This is feasable if you make the new class gain spells like a wizard, except from the cleric list, however.

I am not sure if I will pop this time. Besides having an entropic connection, I do not really feel like playing D&D. Or rather, I haven't felt like playing for the past few sessions, and it may have showed. I do not have any specific criticism against the campaign; I guess it just is my moodiness.

Feel free to use Stisnera if you need her for battles however, or any such thing.

Server closed. I GM'ed. Two troll hunters defeated (one by Possession, and doesn't count), one merchant restored to most his wealth, 7250 EXP to each participant - which only applies to my ECL 11 games. Sorry all y'all. 10,000 in gold, four scrolls, and five potions - all identified at a cost of 1120 GP, one Restoration spell for the Paladin that ran afoul of a trapped chest at a cost of 380 gp. Net booty: four scrolls, five potions, 8,500 gp for the party.

Oh, Narf - did you save the log? If so, could you post it here? I lost the first chunk of mine with the crash in the middle.

Oh, and in answer to your question about Sorceror levels: Yes - six of them. Ghost has a level adjustment of +5 and no hit dice on the template. Six class levels plus a level adjustment of +5 makes ECL 11.

More trouble - Got a server up and running, but not sure how to add a room.

Jack Simth
March 5th, 2005, 08:00 PM
The little "Create Room" button from the Game Server window will work for a one-shot; for a longer-tern solution, you need to edit server_ini.xml (in /openRPG/myFiles)to something like:
Code:

<server>
<service port='6774' address='hostname/address' />
<map file='myfiles/Lobby_map.xml' />
<message file='myfiles/LobbyMessage.html' />
<validate_protocol value='true' />
<room_defaults>
<passwords allow='yes'/>
<map file=''/>
<message file='myfiles/LobbyMessage.html'/>
</room_defaults>
<room name="D and D" password="NotTelling" boot="NotThis">
<map file='myfiles/Lobby_map.xml' />
<message file='myfiles/LobbyMessage.html' />
</room>
<cheat text='**Fudged Roll**' help='The text will be included in any faked roll by anyone but a GM' />
</server>

And then restart the server, of course.

I've actually got my server set up so that all I need to do is run the shortcut (or have the task schedular run it for me) with some command line arguments already included:

start_server.py -p -n Loony -l NotThis

(starts server, registers as "Loony", lobby password "NotThis")

Note that all passwords have been changed in the above examples. Those aren't quite what I use.

If you want to connect to your own server, you can't just select it from the list in the game server as when connecting to someone else's (I couldn't, anyway - might be a security issue with my router - but I can get around it trivially). To connect to your own server, type Code:

127.0.0.1:6774

into the address bar from the game server window and hit the connect button.

Not a problem. As I mentioned, I've got my machine set up now such that in order to start the server, set up the rooms, and set the passwords I only need to run a single shortcut - and if I'm feeling particularly lazy, I can just wait for the schedualed task to run (1/2 an hour before the session) and get the server up and running simply by letting that machine run in sleep mode until it's time. It's easy, now.

Four scrolls, one potions, one bronzewood staff with brass bucklers, 180 platinum pieces and 2500 gold pieces, a large, well-done wool tapestry, a silver comb with moonstones, a silver chalice with lapis lazuli gems, a golden circlet with four aquamarines, a carved wooden harp with ivory inlay and gems, and a jeweled gold crown.

Troll: Checked with detect magic;

Server down and running isn't.

50 skeletons powdered, one evil cleric killed. loot: 1,111 gp (330 spent on Identify; rest given to Derrel so Jason can own the gemstones), 8 small black onyx gems, 4 medium black onyx gems, 1 large black onyx gem; 1 spell components pouch, 5 lbs of silver dust, a vial of Unholy water, a masterwork sickle (+2), a suite of masterwork full plate armor (+2), a large masterwork shield (+2). 900 exp each.

Let's see ... Market prices: Plate 5,650; Sheild 4,170; Sickle 8,306; powdered silver 25 gp; spell components pouch 5 gp; unholy water 25 gp; gemstones: small 25 each (8, so 200 gp), medium 50 each (four, so 200 gp), large 100 (1, so 100 gp). Jason's planning on keeping the gemstones (worth 500, all told); the plate, shield, sickle, and pouch would have a market value of 18,131 gp; sells for 9,086 gp, or 4,543 each.

A heavy warhorse sells for 400 gp, a military saddle for 20 gp, saddlebags for 4 gp, a pack saddle for 15 gp, a donkey or mule for 8 gp. A month's worth (30 days) of feed costs 1.5 gp per animal (5 cp * 30 days = 150 cp = 15 sp = 1.5 gp) (and weighs 300 lbs); a wagon costs 35 gp, a cart costs 15 gp; A heavy horse costs 200 gp.

Two heavy horses, a month's feed for both, a wagon, should cost 200+200+3+35=438 gp.
Heavy horses can drag up to 3000 pounds each; two, 6,000. 600 lbs of feed plus a 400 lbs wagon makes for 1000 lbs; Two heavy horses should be able to drag such a loaded wagon without difficulty.
Jason would like to have Derrel make this purchase for him.

A heavy warhorse, a military saddle, saddlebags, and a month's feed should cost 400+20+4+1.5 = 425.5 gp; if you are interested, Derrel - you do get your own, free, special mount once a day for up to 24 hours (Derrel is on level 12, no?) - although you will want a Military saddle and Saddlebags (24 gp) to go with, so you can store your equipment.

Edit: whoops - was looking at the wrong line - a wagon costs 35 gp, not 40.

Edit 2: and after the purchase, another - a chest (2 gp) with an Amazing Lock (150 GP, DC 40 to open) to store the leftover cash, and put that in the chest - let's see... 5000 for the Dragon, 5000 from the town, is 10,000; 438 for wagon, horses, and feed, 152 for chest and lock runs to 590, leaving 9,510 in the chest ... as long as the Paladin doesn't get greedy.

Yes. I figured nobody would head out to die for 2sp a day, when they could adventure and potentially get 100's of gp. So all mercenaries want a month's wage, in advance. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

(Besides, if I didn't he could have hired 3,000 mercenaries!)

Oh, and log is up.

Jack Simth
April 16th, 2005, 08:28 PM
The specific talk about the economics of hiring mercenaries was on March 12 (log attached).

We settled on 2 sp * level^2 for each mercenary, 6 sp * level ^2 for a leader, food for the duration (5 sp per person per day), minimum duration of one month (30 days); at that rate, a band of 20 level-1 mercs with a level 3 leader ran to a little under 600 gp (6*3*3=54 sp/day to pay the leader, 20*2=40 sp/day to pay the grunts; 21*5=105 sp/day to feed them all, so 162 gp for the leader, 120 gp for the mercenary grunts, 315 gp for the food for a total of 597 gp; rounded to 600 gp for miscalaneous expenses)

As a side note, each of those 20 level-1 warriors is getting roughly 6 gp for the action (2 sp a day, 30 days - a month's salary), in addition to getting trail rations suffiecient for the month. As trail rations are 5 sp a day, the food is more expansive than the Mercs, at that level. Likewise, over 1/4 of the money spent is profit for the mercenary commander.

Edit: Of course, we are raiding a fortress to retrieve a rather pretty penny for - what was the name of that town - which will presumeably cover the expense, and then some.

Orginize the loot, have Jacob cast Detect Magic on it; mundane armor and weapons given to mercs, rest kept for later investigation. Also, stabalize any mercs (and bandits) that we can. Hole up for a few days for healing via Cure Light Wounds.

I'm honestly planning on simply turning the gold in, and claiming the reward. After all, it's just metal.

Other loot, though - as I said, mundane armor + weapons (pretty much what the opposing bandits were wielding / wearing) goes to the mercs, as a combat bonus, say. The rest, though.... For amount, you could just figure the remaining for the CR of the Ogre (3, if it's the SRD cersion) by standard methods, and assume that the other bandits didn't have much (they were what, CR 1, individually?) that didn't get passed out to the mercs as mundane equipment; perhaps a few coins and some gemstones, but nothing earth-shaking.

Methinks "Shady" is a bit more applicable than "Sketchy".
But hey, the people that were wanting to be very greedy have wandered off.....

I might be inclined to further investigate that odd anklet picked up early on - it resisted magical identification, so it is likely either a psionic item, a minor artifact, or an intelligent item; as we have come across a university in our travels, that might be a good place to ask about (or find a Psion with Identify - which should be much less expensive than the magical variety, lacking the Material Component).

Server closed. ECL 12 game. One Barbed Devil disabled but stable, introduced a BBEG very briefly (he didn't stand and fight - he called a conjoured minion to do the job - who failed).

For reference, Devil down to -6 hp.

Jack Simth
May 7th, 2005, 06:29 PM
Did the NPC's react believeably? The BBEG popped in to see what was up (surprise round), and then left to send someone to take care of it; the devil was under a compulsion (and so couldn't simply run away - which, with Greater Teleport at will as a spell-like ability, would have been VERY reliable), and didn't have any experience with the area (had been stuck in a summoning circle until the BBEG set him on us) so didn't know where the traps were.

Jack Simth
May 29th, 2005, 10:11 PM
Well, if you want to look it up (assuming a windows config) you can open up the command prompt (Start/Run/Command.com) and type in IpConfig /all; this will list your entire IP settings for your local machine, including the the "Lease Expires" and "Lease Obtained" times (if you go through a NAT router, then you are leasing an IP from the router, which makes them up and translates from the IP your ISP leases to you - to get the lease info on your ISP in that instance, you need to get the router's info - the method for which varies by router)

I've no particular aversion to renegotiating the timeframe. Let's see... if we were to push it back three hours (2 PM PST), that would put it at 8 am for Randallw; if the figures above are accurate. Likewise, 4 would grant 3 PM and 9 AM, 5: 4 PM and 10 AM.

As to religeon: Your character can have whatever religeon they want. However, in-game, I will neither confirm nor deny beleifs. You can come up with a church, however, complete with building types and church people and I will gladly stea...I mean, borrow it for the game.

As to characters morals, I don't want any evil characters.

For domains (Or anything else), anything I have the book for. I've got the 3.5 PHB, DMG, MM 1&2, Complete Warrior, Arcane and Adventurer and a few Dungeon magazines in the 320 - 330 area. If you find it online and it's official, it's also fine.

Racial alignment is right out.

It depends - If a significant portion of the game takes place in one combat location, I'll probably have a map. If the game is more fluid, or if I'm in an improvisational mood (Which, in my opinion, has produced some of the best and worst of the episodes), I'll forgo the map.

By the way - Jason would have taken the time to explain, but I personally didn't have time at the time - so here it is now:

Jason: Chances are, it's the guy who ran off trying to take a good look at us. Remember what the little fire elemental said? He would stare at his mirror for hours, and it would show him things. That sounds like a standard Scrying spell. If you felt it, he didn't see anything, and he can't try again for at least a day. What really worries me is that he teleports and summons demons....

Rules quote:SRD, Magic Overview, Saving Throw

Succeeding on a Saving Throw: A creature that successfully saves against a spell that has no obvious physical effects feels a hostile force or a tingle, but cannot deduce the exact nature of the attack. Likewise, if a creature’s saving throw succeeds against a targeted spell you sense that the spell has failed. You do not sense when creatures succeed on saves against effect and area spells.

A given specific strand of numbers on a roll of 100d20 is very, very unlikely; 1 in 20^100 .... which is the same as 1 in (10^100)*(2^100); works out to a probability of (roughly) 1 in 1.26 * 10^130 (1 in a very, very large number). Yeah, pretty slim, assuming True Random (which, as a computer generated algorythm, it isn't, really, but hey....)

So.... I had some computer trouble at the end; I'm curious - did you recieve any of the broadcasts where I mentioned what was up?

Last one I got from you was: '(actually, I'm getting fatigued as well, and Jacob is out of his 2nd level spell slots, and will need to camp before any more significant digging can be done. Now's as good a time as any to set camp for the night.)'

So you didn't pick up the broadcasts then. No matter. Had some computer trouble - I'll need to review the log and fix my character's inventory approprietly.

...Still not worried about the wand I gave your character. Does this mean I'm a real DM? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Jack Simth
August 10th, 2005, 12:06 AM
It's hardly worrysome; for one, the wand has a fairly specialty application, and won't come into play much (Gate/Summon Fire Elemental/Bull Rush takes three full turns to use - generally, you are better off just hitting the target with a Shilleag club for a few rounds). Moreover, to get a fire elemental that has a reasonable chance of bull rushing even a human wizard, he needs a medium elemental - which isn't available until Summon Nature's Ally IV, at level 7 (and the better fire elementals for bull rushing are large or better, at Summon Nature's Ally V, at level 9). Even further, just because he knows the word to activate it, doesn't mean he can do the full activation - most wands are "spell completion" and not "command word". Still further, most have a limited number of charges.

Of course you aren't worried.

It's not Gate - It's custom.

I'm the GM. I can do that. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

(It also is usefull and useable for pushing enemies through - About the rest, I'm not commenting) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Hey Jack, what did we decide about the characters' level of new players joining?

Jack Simth
August 10th, 2005, 08:19 PM
I belive we settled on the same amount of XP as the lowest character currently playing, ditto for GP.

narf poit chez BOOM
August 10th, 2005, 10:56 PM
Um. That...Doesn't really fit anymore...:D

Jack Simth
August 10th, 2005, 11:04 PM
Perhaps I should have said PC, rather than character.

We could also do standard 3rd for now - match it by level, rather than by PC

narf poit chez BOOM
August 10th, 2005, 11:35 PM
Hmm...Guess I sorta skimmed it. I just meant that there's only one PC to compare levels with.

Anyway, Ashton was expressing interest.

Jack Simth
August 14th, 2005, 02:01 AM
Server didn't crash - I thought we were done for the day, and closed it.

I also thought I used the server's broadcast mechanisim to tell everyone that I was closing the server ... did that not get through?

NullAshton
August 14th, 2005, 01:21 PM
Can we start early Saturday, to finish our roleplay?

narf poit chez BOOM
August 15th, 2005, 11:47 AM
Jack: I was refering to when my connection went down - I couldn't see the server in the list.

Ashton: I have no objection.

narf poit chez BOOM
August 19th, 2005, 11:08 PM
Well, Jack hasn't said anything...It used to be at 11:00 so I'm pretty sure we could manage 2-3 hours.

August 20th, 2005, 12:51 AM

I won't have my notes for this session, since my computers in the shop, but I can try my best to work from memory. Or we could all play Jack's campaign (Although I hope I gave him a copy of my character)...

Jack Simth
August 20th, 2005, 02:55 PM
or # .... wait, there wasn't any door number 4. Oh well. I suppose we could build another if needed....

You did, but I think that was a level ago.

Jack Simth
August 20th, 2005, 02:57 PM
Well, I have the server on. Not sure when everyone is supposed to show up, but the server's on.

Noon - We could play in 13 minutes, but it would be rather incoherent.

Besides, I'd miss Samuri Jack.
