Jack Simth

Actually, burning water into hydrogen ash is actually being worked on as a viable method of storing energy.

Burning water into helium and loose oxygen is being worked on for generating energy.

El_Phil
February 3rd, 2006, 09:25 AM
Burning water into helium and loose oxygen sounds very tricky. For starters where does the helium come from. You could fuse together two hydrogen atoms to get helium, but that isn't really burning, that's nuclear fusion.

As for the first part I'll hold my hands up and say I have no idea what that means. As I understand it you could call water 'hydrogen ash' as it is fully oxidised (burnt) hydrogen. So how do you burn something that is already burnt? And how do you store energy by doing so http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/confused.gif

Strategia_In_Ultima
February 3rd, 2006, 02:38 PM
Most expensive? Naah. Diamonds are IIRC actually one of the most ubiquitous precious stones there are, it's just the fact they used to be so rare (and of course their sparkly shiny look when cut, and the fact that it's the most dense naturally occuring material known to date) which is why they're expensive.

Then again, my source (old space strategy game called Fragile Allegiance) may not be entirely accurate in this time period, so I might be completely off the mark here.....

El_Phil
February 3rd, 2006, 03:05 PM
Diamonds aren't dense, not especially.. They are the hardest naturally occuring substance and only beaten by a few very odd man made compounds.

The expense depends on size, disproportionatly so. Industrial diamonds (fraction of a carat sized) are indeed dirt cheap and fairly common. As you get bigger you get rarer and hugely more expensive.

A typical mine will 'lose' 80-90% of the total carat value in processing, but that only accounts for less than 1% of the money value. That's how 'worthless' small carat stones are.

On the other hand if it weren't for jewelry the large diamonds would be equally worthless, they have no inherent value, just the rarity and sparklyness of them. Which is part of the reason man made jewelry diamond haven't caught on, a man made large diamond is like a knock off designer clothing. It's a statement of wealth and status, so buying a cheap one defeats the point (unless you haven't got the money, but want people to think you have http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)

NullAshton

Nuclear fusion is just a special kind of burning..... also, it's four hydrogen atoms -> one helium atom.

You use electricity to un-burn it. You use electrical energy to separate the water into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas, changing electral energy into potential chemical energy (2(h2O) -> 2(h2) + o2); as long as nothing sets it off, and you keep the two gas types thus produced around (and separated, hopefully), the stored energy is very stable. With the application of a small amount of energy (and mixing the two types of gas back up), you can convert that potential chemical energy into another form of energy - electricity, say. Sure, there's energy lost to an unuseable form at every stage.... but you can store it just about forever.

El_Phil
February 4th, 2006, 01:29 PM
Yeah I did get my nuclear fusion wrong, it's been a while. I still wouldn't call it burning though.

Ditto the first past, seperating hydrogen and oxygen and storing the gases that isn't burning or even oxidisation. When you recombine them, that's oxidation. (By the definitions I know anyway) That's what threw me, the way you phrased the first statement. Still all cleared up now.

Jack Simth
February 4th, 2006, 01:47 PM
Oxidize (and closely related words) is a technical term.
Burn isn't.
Acid getting on your hand is still said to burn your skin, even if no portion of your skin combines with oxygen in the process. An iron nail sitting in a bucket of oxegenated liquid water usually oxidizes; few people would say it burns there.
Sort of like insect vs. bug. A spider is a bug, but not an insect. Although I can see where people often get confused, as there's a lot of overlap between bug and insect.

NullAshton

Jack Simth

Yeah.

Sometimes they're simply clueless.

Recently, the company I currently work for was concerned about the high turnover rate. So they had a meeting to try and figure out why. Five or ten of them got together in one of the training rooms, and discussed the matter over pizza and cake. They kicked the training class of about 30-40 out of the training room, and pushed them into the meeting room suitable for about 10.

And they wonder why turnover's so high.

The problem with people and power is some people, once they gain a certain amount of power, begin to feel they are entitled to it.

This leads to the thought that they have a right to exert that power, which leads to the thought that other people don't have the right to exert power against them, which leads to petty tyrants.

In Europe, we refer to what you (across the great pond) refer to as a "billion" as a "milliard". A "billion" means "a million times a million", which makes more sense to me as "bi"=2, and our "billion" is a million squared.

Oh, and somehow I snatched up a subject from somewhere over on the Dom2 forums, or so it seems. I think it happened once before.

Hey, there have been times where such little discrepancies have cost companies a fair chunk of change (contract spelled out the value via words, such as "three hundred fourty-seven million dollars, USD", rather than typing up the number, such as $347,000,000 USD), depending on where the contract details were arbitrated.....

A few days ago, I went to the casino with some friends. I just watched the other guys play and I didn't gamble because I know very well that the games are set up to take your money. Strangely, though, all three of the guys that gambled at the blackjack tables made money, making between $25 and $160 within an hour or so. They made it look very easy.

...But I later found out that they just happened to be lucky that day, and they had lost hundreds, or even thousands of dollars during previous visits to the casino. I have no idea how these guys can afford to lose so much money and keep playing. As far as I know, they're just average guys and they're not rich or anything. But they don't hesitate to bring a few hundred dollars each time they visit the casino and blow it all. That just doesn't make sense; it's kind of an expensive form of entertainment. For me, every dollar is precious and I'd hate to lose my hard-earned money gambling when I could use it to buy groceries.

Jack Simth
May 16th, 2006, 03:51 AM
Yep. It's also a psychologically addictive form of entertainment, and the casinos usually set the expected return at about .99 for the player; that is, you bet 1 penny 100 times, and on average, the number of times you win and the number of times you lose will leave you with 99 pennies. $20 will go a long ways on the nickel machines. A lot of the times, a "good" gambler isn't actually spending any more money on gambling in a given month than a smoker does on cigaretts in the same timeframe. Both will often make ends meet by skimping a might on meals - hamburger rather than pork chops, and the like.

People who don't know when to stop, though... they tend not to have houses, cars, or friends after a while.

NullAshton
May 16th, 2006, 08:39 AM
Actually, for blackjack, it is possible with a certain style of playing to actually beat the house, by about 0.01%. It's a small advantage, but it means you're actually gaining money.

And if you're not that good, you can just try to have fun, instead of winning money.

I have several friends and plenty more extended family members that enjoy casino gambling quite a bit. The only way I could justify it to myself would be in the "winning big" stories and the illusion that you are getting free drinks. Have you ever had bubble tea? If I were to start a business, I would consider opening a bubble tea shop because it seems like those drinks are high-priced in relation to the ingredients, and it must therefore be quite profitable. There's different flavors of bubble tea, each with a different fruit flavor or whatever, and they put these pearls in there and charge $5 or $6 for a cup. I can buy an inexpensive lunch for that kind of price. It's sort of a social thing: you would never go to a bubble tea place alone, but you go because your friends go, and you all end up buying the expensive drinks. They give you a big wide straw for sucking the pearls that are at the bottom of the tea.

Bump. Because we still haven't reached 200 pages yet. We should.

Then we should continue all the way to 1,000 pages, to see if there's a comma in the page number.

Heck yeah. Then we could have the entire galaxy have time accelerators installed on it, so we won't have to wait years to see the results.

Jack Simth
September 22nd, 2006, 11:41 PM
Oh, if you're going electric, make sure to use capacitors rather than batteries. Higher weight, lower effeciency, lower capacity, but almost no maintenence at all.... ever.

Oh, and while you're at it, install a universal constructor (They're Working On It (http://reprap.org/)) in the back.

Wouldn't it be just perfect to have a van that could make full-sized copies of itself?

Kamog
September 23rd, 2006, 01:19 AM
That constructor is neat. One day we'll have Star Trek replicators and we'll never have to go grocery shopping. You just instantly materialize your dinner.

Rapid prototyping and direct writing technologies are sufficiently versatile to allow them to be used to make a von Neumann Universal Constructor.

_____

Subject: Fw: Summary of this year's emails

-----

I must send my thanks to whoever sent me the one about rat poop in the glue
on envelopes because I now have to use a wet towel with every envelope that
needs sealing.

Also, now I have to scrub the top of every can I open for the same reason.

I no longer have any savings because I gave it to a sick girl (Penny Brown)
who is about to die in the hospital for the 1,387,258th time.

I no longer have any money at all, but that will change once I receive the
$15,000 that Bill Gates/Microsoft and AOL are sending me for participating
in their special e-mail program.

I no longer worry about my soul because I have 363,214 angels looking out
for me, and St. Theresa's novena has granted my every wish.

I no longer eat KFC because their chickens are actually horrible mutant
freaks with no eyes or feathers.

I no longer use cancer-causing deodorants even though I smell like a water
buffalo on a hot day

Thanks to you, I have learned that my prayers only get answered if I forward

an email to seven of my friends and make a wish within five minutes.

Because of your concern I no longer drink Coca Cola because it can remove
toilet stains.

I no longer can buy gasoline without taking a man along to watch the car so
a serial killer won't crawl in my back seat when I'm pumping gas.

I no longer drink Pepsi or Dr. Pepper since the people who make these
products are atheists who refuse to put "Under God" on their cans.

I no longer use Saran wrap in the microwave because it causes cancer.

And thanks for letting me know I can't boil a cup water in the microwave
anymore because it will blow up in my face...disfiguring me for life.

I no longer check the coin return on pay phones because I could be pricked
with a needle infected with AIDS.

I no longer go to shopping malls because someone will drug me with a perfume

sample and rob me.

I no longer receive packages from UPS or FedEx since they are actually Al
Qaeda in disguise.

I no longer shop at Target since they are French and don't support our
American troops or the Salvation Army.

I no longer answer the phone because someone will ask me to dial a number
for which I will get a phone bill with calls to Jamaica , Uganda , Singapore

and Uzbekistan ..

I no longer have any sneakers -- but that will change once I receive my free

replacement pair from Nike.

I no longer buy expensive cookies from Neiman Marcus since I now have

their recipe.

Thanks to you, I can't use anyone's toilet but mine because a big brown
African spider is lurking under the seat to cause me instant death when it
bites my butt.

Thank you too for all the endless advice Andy Rooney, George Carlin and

Robin Williams has given us.. I can live a better life now because they told

us how to fix everything.

And thanks to your great advice, I can't ever pick up $5.00 I dropped in the

parking lot because it probably was placed there by a sex molester waiting
underneath my car to grab my leg.

Oh, and don't forget this one either! I can no longer drive my car because I

can't buy gas from certain gas companies!

If you don't send this e-mail to at least 144,000 people in the next 70
minutes, a large dove with diarrhea will land on your head at 5:00 PM this
afternoon and the fleas from 12 camels will infest your back, causing you to

grow a hairy hump. I know this will occur because it actually happened to a
friend of my next door neighbor's ex-mother-in-law's second husband's
cousin's beautician...........and believe it or not, this email will be
tracked.

Have a wonderful day....

Surprisingly, post count dosen't mean that much.

High post counts are merely a symptom and/or side effect of the underlying disease known as Space Empiritis.
Those with particularily acute cases tend to spawn large quantities of mods, shipsets, PBW games and other infection vectors.

Naturally these primary symptoms are of much more concern. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Today I was cleaning the dishes and thought of Narf. Here I was getting them ready for the dishwasher and for the first time I noticed that cheese has a very low melting point. You know that strainer thingy in the bottom of the sink right? It was full of cheese yet the water wasn't really all that hot to the touch. Anyway I thought of Narf when I say it there and that gave me a little chuckle. I also thought of how hard it would be to get it out from under my wedding band since I can't get the darn thing off my finger anymore. I should really get it cut off before something dumb happens and it takes some of my finger off!

Last post for the night. Goodnight sleep tight and I wish you all the best in life,
PE Shang

Learning to play the piano is so hard! I've been taking lessons for over a year now, and lately I've been practising for an hour every day, but I'm still horrible at it!

I have great respect and admiration for people who can play any musical instrument well, because I can appreciate the amount of time and dedication they must have put into it. It's not easy at all.
