Sometime during the night we passed the 1/4 milestone, "Yeah Baby". Now we're getting somewhere, The next milestone is at the 50% mark. (AKA The point of no return.)

I wonder how fast we can get there?

Yes indeed it sure is cold when a Fart is visible to the naked eye, but thankfully this same 'cold' prevents you from smelling it.

I almost burst out laughing when I saw that. (I waited till I got home and shared the experience with my Brother and Mom, we all had a good belly laugh.

Although hybrid cars use a lot less fuel and are environmentally friendly, I heard that they may not save you money because the cost of the car is higher. I suppose that after many years of driving, the fuel savings will offset the initial price of the car and you'll start saving money, but it's probably going to take a long time to get to that point.

After much looking and test driving, I went with a Civic. Except for the lack of snow traction, I have been very happy with it. I put some Goodyears on the front of it and the snow problem seems to be fixed now. I had sought to find someone who has had one for a while so that I could see if they had any tips as to care and feeding and such.

This was the strangest car deal I ever made. In the past I always bought Chevy's, I negotiated a price and then ordered the car/truck. Thank you very much end of deal. With the Honda it was pick one off the lot, pay the price on the window, no negotiations, then brace yourself for some butt kissing. The place calls my wife every other day to make sure she is happy. They sent us cookies. And I get email from Honda almost every day.

Well, based on the info I had, it should pay off. The Cavalier we had got about 20mpg. The Honda is getting 39 now and still improving as it breaks in. At 2$ gal, it would be about a 5K fuel savings at 100K miles. Take the difference in price of the hybrid Civic and conventional Civic and it leaves about 1500 bucks.

The one thing I can’t get used to is the engine shutting off at stop lights. Even though I know what is happening, I still have a moment of panic every time it shuts off.

Wah? I hadn't heard they do that, but it makes sense I guess. Sounds like a golf cart you got there. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Does it feel like a real car performance wise? Does it take off ok when the light turns green? How's acceleration on the highway?

The new hybrids are kinda cool. But I have one observation. If you buy one all your doing is transfering the gas you would use in the car to a power planet. So the effect is the same, just distributed differantly. Besides, what would you rather pay? $2.20 a gallon for gas, = 30 miles, or $5.10 per 30 miles of power? You do have to charge the batteries, and that does not come cheaply, especially in energy strapped CA.

AT, the new hybrids do not have to be charged by house current. They recharge while coasting.

It has more pep under normal driving than the Cavalier. The electric motor feels sort of like a turbo. It runs 80+ with very little effort. It uses the trans motor to start the engine, so you hear nothing. The engine just starts running as soon as you let off the break. As long as you drive with one foot, there is no lag starting off. My wife is a two footer, so she has a little trouble with it in the city.

I did not know that. I am still 50/50 on the idea of a hybrid. I know that electric motors have excellent torque, but sustained draw on them depletes them rapidly.

I watched a show on PBS about hybrid/electric cars with Alan Alda and found the information fasinating. I am for Hydrogen cars - if they can master the dry sell technology.

It never needs to be plugged in, the engine charges the batteries. Any time you let off the gas, it starts charging them. It tries to estimate what your intentions are and uses the charging so that it mimics engine braking. When you break, it goes to full charge and really pulls the speed down. If the batteries get below 50%, it will charge the a little when you are just driving along. I think the physics are based on converting momentum into electricity, then using the electricity to make the car go. So it is recycling the energy.

You know its a sad day in your life when you open up the old file cabnet draw that houses all of your old work papers. You know the draw filled with old memo's, document, reports, statisical anylis, etc. In my case I have a draw and a half full of documentation that spans my about six and half years of my life. Quite detailed information, logs, reports, and so on for the great year of my demise, 98.

I can look back through this draw and see the life I used ot have right there before me. The detailed reports I wrote, the SOP/SOC's I authored. All of the CC mails, and inter office memos. The requests for promotion, the incident reports, hell I even have all of the monthly shift reports tucked nicely away in their own folders.

So much data, so much work, so much a part of the life I once knew and for the breifest time, enjoyed. 98 was the beginning of the end for me, and despite my best efforts at throrting diseaser, it came any ways.

Now here I am, reading all of these old memo's, reports, and the like, and slowling slip into a semi-deep state of depression over the memories long since past. Oh how I miss those days when I could come and go as needed, was paid well, enjoyed my job, and really loved working for the company. I can track my organization right up to the point that it all fell apart. I go from organized files to haphazardly organized folders filled with messy wrinckled memos and hand written documents.

I even found a report written seven years ago today. I have daily logs for every day I worked from 1997 through 1999. So I can go back and review what it was I was doing on any particular day of those years.

I cannot bring myself to the task of tossing these papers, hell I still have records from when I worked at the Big Red S almost 20 years ago. I know, I am a pack rat.

As I sit here typing this post, I realize that seven years ago today I sat in front of an old 386 PC and typed a report about down time. I do miss those days so horribly bad, but what can one do now? If you live in the past, you have no future.

So I guess I should take all of the reports, files, memo's, training manuals, SOP's/SOC's, cc mails, all of it, out to the burn pile and burn it.

I mean, what purpose does any of it have now except to depress me?

[Babble Mode On]

I too have some old monkeys in my closet/drawer. If I listed the pros and cons of my life the cons (that is the negative part right?) are a good 100 times longer than the pros. Do I have regrets? Hell yes. But I can't go back and change things, so I am forced to chalk it all up to experience.

All I can say is I haven't made the same mistakes twice, so I guess all those bad memories did serve a purpose.

Today my philosophy is I do what I can, I try to improve my meager talents and I take things one step/day at a time. That's all I can do. And you know what? Slowly but surely I'm thinking less and less about all the historical crap in my life.

Right now things are on the uptake, but this 'move in the right direction' has taken me 14 years. I guess I'm ready for a 'qualified' overnight success. Then in the impending interviews they'll say "Oh, so you've been at this for a long time, wow, I never heard of you before."

I have some minor question about a few observations I have.

One, Stargate SG1. Why haven't the Jafa figured out that radio's work? I mean that horn thing is a horrible way to communicate.

In Voyager, I think the Kazon are like African tribes. Don't ask me why I think this, it just seems logical.

Why won't guns fire in space?

I wonder if we will ever break the speed of light, or exceed it.

What year do you think we will discover that we are not alone in the universe, provided you believe in such a thing?

The bigger question would be "When will Carter show some skin?"

As to Voyager, it should be Saint Voyager. Geese here on earth it only took one miracle to get sainted.

Guns will fire in space. But the recoil would be a real issue.

According to Cosby, it has already been done. Kids can turn off the light, then jump into bed before it gets dark. Also known as the speed of the dark!

Blonde. Security officer on NCC-1701-D before Worf; died by the "hand" of some black ooze leftover from when some then-gone race expunged all the evil from their systems. The death of Jar Jar. The extremely whiny/annoying Anakin. Palpatine, "I'm announcing you all... are... morons!". The muppets. EPT-1138 (in reference to THX-1138). The fake drawing causing Anakin to turn. Mace Windu being closer to Shaft than a Jedi. Obi-wan's drinking. The names for the "Death Star". "I am your baby's daddy!".

Pure genius. It's hard to imagine Episode III being any worse, and because it is the embodiment of fans' worst nightmares, it automatically becomes funny.

It's a math trick; every multiple of 9 (except 0, but it specifies a two digit number, so that won't happen, will it?) is the same randomly assigned symbol. It has you take a number in range, and subtract the sum of it's digits from it - the result? A multiple of 9 (unless you pick something under 10, anyway; and even then, 0 is technically a multiple of 9 - but it's not one the program flags - it would be too obvious). Consider: 99: 9+9 = 18; 99-18 = 81 = 9x9. 98: 9+8 = 17; 98-17 = 81 = 9x9. Dropping the original number by 1 will result in the same 81 until you drop below 90 - at which point, it goes to the next multiple of 9 down - 89: 8+9 = 17; 89 - 17 = 72 = 9x8. The pattern continues; from 79 to 70 you get 63 (9x7); from 69 to 60 you get 54 (9x6); from 59 to 50 you get 45 (9x5), et cetera, et cetera.

Daynarr
February 1st, 2005, 11:45 AM
Ok, this is creepy.

How does it know what symbol is correct one if there is NO input from me? Regardless of the fact that I choose digits in range, I still get different symbol each try and it guesses it correctly without any input. Creepy I tell you.

geoschmo
February 1st, 2005, 12:12 PM
Oh wow, that is really clever. Even with the explanation Jack gave it kind of freaked me out at first like it did Daynar.

The real reason this works so well is that it changes the symbols for the mutiples of nine. Every final number is a multiple of nine, and the symbols for the multiples of nine are all the same each turn, so it can't be wrong no matter what number you pick, unless you subtract incorrectly (Which I did a couple times. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif ). But the "multiples of nine" symbol changes from turn to turn, so it's not so obvious that it's always a multiple of nine you are getting.

If it didn't change teh symbols you'd catch on when you kept getting the same sybol from turn to turn. And if you tried this trick just using the numbers your subconcious would pick up the pattern pretty quick that the answer is always a multiple of nine. There are so many symbols you have to pay attention to realize they are changing from turn to turn.

Very clever. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

In other words, your task will be to boss around everybody of a lower rank than yourself: such is the pleasure of having "general" in your title.

A shame we cannot pull authority on someone on the boards though. What good are promotions for if you do not get privileges in the process? *Goes away grumbling to the officers mess* Or to the relocated mess, as proximity with the Cantina was found to have... unfortunate side effects.

THINGS IT TOOK YEARS TO LEARN

1. Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

2. If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would be "meetings."

3. There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

4. People who want to share their religious views with you almost never want you to share yours with them.

5. You should not confuse your career with your life.

6. Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance. (I wish I had!)

7. Never lick a steak knife.

8. The most destructive force in the universe is gossip.

9. There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to make a big deal about your birthday. That time is age 21

10. A person, who is nice to you, but rude to a waiter, is not a nice person. (This is very important. Pay attention. It never fails.)

11. Your friends love you anyway

12. Never be afraid to try something new. Remember that a lone amateur built the Ark. A large group of professionals built the Titanic.

Hey! I think that a person's birthday is always a time of celebration. I'm gonna be 33 this year and I fully expect a grand production. And to be fair, I treat others the same way on their birthday.... except for the ONE time I forgot my wife's...

That trick is done by the 50% rule.. Make a white square, make a gray square that is 50% darker than the white one, then cast a shadow over these that is also set at 50% darker. the white square in the shadow will be the same as the dark square in the light. the dark square in the shadow will also be 50% darker and therefore create the illusion that there is a shadow. add a soft edge to the shadow and it is even more convincing.

It is a neat effect though. Escher would be proud.

Subject: Culinary kinetic weaponry - how would Honorverse armour go?
Author: Leon Brooks

While on the topic of oldies but goodies, this text answers the
age-old question:

To: humor@MIT.EDU
Subject: glen mccready:
Under enough pressure, ravioli behaves as a gas.
Date: Tue, 29 Dec 1998 16:42:06 EST
From: "Nathan J. Williams"

There was still one aspect of the whole concept of a
ravioli-loaded railgun type weapon which we, lolling about
late on a weeknight, with only a few neurons randomly
firing, could not resolve. Would a chunk of metal (can of
ravioli) impacting another, larger, rest mass structure
(star destroyer) produce an "explosion" effect, or simply
punch an appropriately shaped hole as it passed through?

Bill?

What am I, the neighborhood blast physicist??? Well, maybe... :-)

It all depends on speed of impact versus the speed of sound in the
target (what is called the Mach number, where Mach 1 means the speed
of sound, Mach 2 is twice the speed of sound, etc), and the speed of
the ravioli versus the speed of light in the target (which I'll call
the Cerenkov number, where Cerenkov 1 is the speed of light in
anything; Cerenkov 1.3 is the speed of high-energy protons in a
water-cooled reactor (that's why you get that nifty blue glow), and
you can get up to Cerenkov 2.4 using diamonds and nuclear
accelerators. In the late 40's people used to talk about Cerenkov
numbers, but they don't anymore. Pity.). Lastly, there's the ravioli
velocity expressed as a fraction of the speed of light in a vacuum
(that is, as a fraction of "c"). "C" velocities are always between 0
and 1.

At low speeds (REAL low) the ravioli will simply flow over the
surface, yielding a space-cruiser with a distinctly Italian paint
job.

Faster (still well below speed-of-sound in the target) the metal of
the space-cruiser's skin will distort downward, making what we Boston
drivers call a "small dent".

Faster still, you may have a "big dent" or maybe even a "big dent with
a hole in the middle", caused by the ravioli having enough energy to
push the dent through, stretching and thinning the hull metal till
the metal finally tears in the middle of the dent.

Getting up past Mach 1 (say, 5000 feet/sec for steel), you start to
get punch-a-hole-shaped-like-the-object effects, because the metal is
being asked to move faster than the binding forces in the object can
propagate the "HEY! MOVE!" information. (After all, sound is just the
binding forces between atoms in a material moving the adjacent atoms
-- and the speed of sound is how fast the message to "move" can
propagate.) From this, we see that WileE Coyote often reached
far-supersonic speeds because he often punched silhouette-type holes
in rocks, cliffs, trucks, etc.

Around Mach 4 or so, another phenomenon starts -- compressive heating.
This is where the leading edge of the ravioli actually starts being
heated by compression (remember PV=nRT, the ideal gas law?) Well,
ravioli isn't a gas, but under enough pressure, ravioli behaves as a
gas. It is compressed at the instant of impact and gets hot -- very
hot. Likewise, the impact point on the hull is compressed and gets
hot. Both turn to gasses -- real gasses, glowing-white-hot gasses.
The gasses expand spherically, causing crater-like effects, including
a raised rim and a basically parabolic shape. In the center of the
crater, some material is vaporized, then there's a melt zone, then a
larger "bent" zone, and the raised rim is caused because the gas
expansion bubble center point (the bending force) is actually
*inside* the hull plate. If the hull plate isn't thick enough, then
the gas-expansion bubble pushes through to the other side, and you
get a structural breach event (technically speaking, a "big hole") in
the side of the space-cruiser.

Compressive heating really hits the stride up around 20,000 feet/sec
(Mach 4 in steel, Mach 15 in air) and continues as a major factor all
the way up to the high fractional Cerenkov speeds, where nuclear
forces begin to take effect.

Aside: the "re-entry friction heating" that spacecraft endure when the
reenter the atmosphere is NOT friction. It's really compressive
heating of the air in the path. As long as the spacecraft is faster
than Mach 1, the air can't know to get out of the way, so it bunches
up in front of the spacecraft. When you squeeze any gas, it gets hot.
So, the glowing "reentry gas" is really just squeezed air, which
heats the spacecraft heat shield by conduction and infrared. The
hypersonic ravioli can be expected to behave similarly.

As we increase speed from the high Mach numbers (about 10 miles/sec)
all the way up to about 150,000 miles/sec, not much different happens
except that the amount of kinetic energy (which turns into
compressive heat) increases. This is a huge range of velocity, but
it's uninteresting velocity.

At high fractional Cerenkov speeds, the ravioli is now beginning to
travel at relativistic velocities. Among other things, this means
that the ravioli is aging more slowly than usual, and the ravioli can
looks compressed in the direction of travel. But that's really not
important right now.

As we pass Cerenkov 1.0 in the target, we get a new phenomenon --
Cerenkov radiation. This is that distinctive blue glow seen around
water-cooled reactors. It's just (relatively) harmless light
(harmless compared to the other blast effects, that is). I mention it
only because it's so nifty...

At around .9 c (Cerenkov 1.1) , the ravioli starts to perceptibly
weigh more. It's just a relativistic mass increase -- all the
additional weight is actually energy, available to do compressive
heating upon impact. The extra weight is converted to heat energy
according to the equation E=mc^2; it looks like compressive heating
but it's not.

[Here's where I'm a little hazy on the numbers; I'm at work and don't
have time to rederive the Lorentz transformations.]

At around .985 c (Cerenkov 1.2 or so), the ravioli now weighs twice
what it used to weigh. For a one pound can, that's two pounds... or
about sixty megatons of excess energy. All of it turns to heat on
impact. Probably very little is left of the space-cruiser.

At around .998 c, the impacting ravioli begins to behave less like
ravioli and more like an extremely intense radiation beam. Protons in
the water of the ravioli begin to successfully penetrate the nuclei
of the hull metal. Thermonuclear interactions, such as hydrogen
fusion, may take place in the tomato sauce.

At around .9998 c, the ravioli radiation beam is still wimpy as far as
nuclear accelerator energy is concerned, but because there is so much
of it, we can expect a truly powerful blast of mixed radiation coming
out of the impact site. Radiation, not mechanical blast, may become
the largest hazard to any surviving crew members.

At around .9999999 c, the ravioli radiation may begin to produce
"interesting" nuclear particles and events (heavy, short-lived
particles).

At around .999999999999 c, the ravioli impact site may begin to
resemble conditions in the original "big bang"; equilibrium between
matter and energy; free pair production; antimatter and matter
coexisting in equilibrium with a very intense gamma-ray flux etc. [1]

Past that, who knows? It may be possible to generate quantum black
holes given a sufficiently high velocity can of ravioli.

--Bill

[1] According to physicist W. Murray, we may also expect raining
frogs, plagues of locusts, cats and dogs living together, real
Old Testament destruction. You get the idea...

Cheers; Leon

Subject: Why I'm so Tired
Author: David Start
Date: 06 Feb 2005 10:38 AM
An oldie, but a goodie....

WHY AM I SO TIRED???

For a couple years I've been blaming it on lack of sleep, not enough
sunshine, too much pressure from my job, earwax build-up, poor blood or
anything else I could think of. But now I found out the real reason: I'm
tired because I'm overworked.

Here's why: The population of this country is 273 million.

140 million are retired. That leaves 133 million to do the work.

There are 85 million in school. Which leaves 48 million to do the work.

Of this there are 29 million employed by the federal government. Leaving 19
million to do the work.

2.8 million are in the armed forces preoccupied with killing Saddam Hussein.
Which leaves 16.2 million to do the work.

Take from the total the 14,800,000 people who work for state and city
governments. And that leaves 1.4 million to do the work.

At any given time there are 188,000 people in hospitals. Leaving 1,212,000
to do the work.

Now, there are 1,211,998 people in prisons. That leaves just two people to
do the work. You and me.

And there you are sitting on your ***, at your computer, reading jokes.
Nice, real nice.

Lucky you. I had a standard schedule of 35 hours a week at high school, and I was supposed to work 15 hours a week at home. It was fairly high... by French standards that is.

Now, in my first year at university, I am currently working an amazing fifteen hours a week, with no compulsory papers to produce. Even in kindergarten children spend more time at school than most students in our universities. Granted, since I am studying English I do not consider most of what I do at home to be "work" (reading books would hardly fall under "work" to me, unlike doing maths and other banes of the high school student).

Nope. Neptune doesn't have the eye anymore, remember? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

It's a colour-modified map of Ganymede. Pretty close but not quite.

Actually, blue isn't so bad for the engines. Ion-drive exhaust could very well be blue. Everybody makes exhaust red and orange I guess because we are thinking about rockets. But this blue is a little too similer to the planet in the background. It kind of reminds me when the weatherman wears the wrong color tie and you can see teh map through his chest. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Atrocities
February 14th, 2005, 06:16 AM
I have been asked to write a review of any mod for Space Empires IV, not that I am any where near qualified to write such a review, never the less I have been asked, and will attempt to do so. Given that I have been working pretty much non-stop on the Star Trek Mod, it can be said, and quite truthfully, that I have lost some interest in the game. Oh don’t be shocked or depressed by this revelation, accept it for what it is, a true acknowledgement of how wonderful this game truly is.

Now to pick the mod that I would like to review….. well by picking I mean one that I have played. Since I have only played a few mods, and by a few I mean four or five, two of which were my own, my choices are very limited.

You see, I have invested all of my free time over the last six months in one mod, the Star Trek Mod, and have had little time to play any other mod. I in fact gave up playing many of my PBW games in order to focus more openly on the Star Trek Mod. So when I was asked to write a review of a mod it occurred to me that I have not played any other mod for Space Empires IV other than the one I was working on so I honestly could not write a review.

Well that wasn’t a problem; I’ll just choose a mod and start up a game. So I sat down in front of my computer, browsed the forums for a bit, drank some tea, and click on the mod launcher. I looked through the list of available mods, and opted to load the Adamant Mod.

The mods splash screen loaded displaying its impressive artwork, by David Gervais, and I clicked New Game. As I sat, staring at the choices before me, something happened. Without even knowing it, I realized that I had lost my interest in actually playing Space Empires. I was shocked and dismayed by this and a little bit depressed by it as well. I realized that I have literally spent more time on this game than I have on any other game that I have ever owned. I paused in mid thought and actually asked myself, “What in the hell am I doing?” My God the duplicity of this game defies sinister and literally boggles the mind when trying to comprehend its scope. I mean how insidious is the mind of Aaron Hall that he can create a game so addictive that it literally consumes ones life much like a super massive black hole sucks in matter! Oh please don’t miss-read me on this, I love the game and would not trade away the time I have spent on it for any thing less than I have already spent on it, but I cannot help but wonder how I became so overwhelmingly addicted to this game.

I honestly had to sit back and think about what it was I was doing. Here I am, at 2:00 am in the morning, looking blankly at the Player Set up menu for a game that I have played over a 2,000 times. By now I should be horribly bored with this game and should have long since tossed it into the toaster pile, but here I am, sitting here staring at the game options before me, already anticipating how I will crush my opponents and defile their remains. I think it was at this point that I realized that I had been playing this game for so long that it had become second nature to me. I knew exactly what I wanted to do, and for the first time in a long time, I questioned it. It was at that point that I paused and began to realize that I was no longer interested in what it was that I was interested in. A paradoxal catch 22 enigma to be sure and one that faced me with both barrels.

It was as if a bell had gone off in my mind and a new sense of reality over took me. I simply sat there, looking at the screen, wondering what in the hell I was doing. I should be in bed I thought, or at least out looking for a nice women to take home, but no, here I am sitting in front of my computer, holding a cup of tea and slowly realizing that this was what I preferred to be doing. When did this happen? When did I become so hopelessly addicted to this game that it became a daily part of my life? The sad part is, I actually know when, it was the very day that my disk arrived at my home in its weathered envelope and I called in sick so I could play it.

The moment I installed the game and clicked the ICON was when my life changed forever. It was the game that I had always been looking for yet could never find like living in some horrible dream. But my dream had come true, for I looked upon the face of delight and saw in its reflection the calling of my sole; Overseer of the known galaxy. All I had to do was choose my settings and launch the game. Oh the wonders of that first time, the day that I knew I could play past the 100 turn limit and actually build battleships. The pleasure it gave me was like no other I had experienced before. Gratification on an epic level as I glassed world after world into oblivion. I would rename the natural races after people I hated, and then hunt them down and obliterate them without mercy. Hours of game play turned into days, weeks, then months, and then I discovered the true calling of the game, its moddability. First I started making ship sets, a lot of ship sets, and not so crappy ones too, then everything evolved, Gold was announced and for the first time in a long time I whipped out the credit card and pre-ordered without so much as thinking twice. (A decision that I have never regretted.)

But now, four years later, here I sit blankly staring at my monitor realizing for the first time that the emotion that Space Empires IV brought to my life had dimmed. It was like loosing a good friend, a sad depressing, even sickening feeling began to overwhelm me. So I did what I always do when depression comes, I sat quietly and pondered my life.

If only I were an evil dictator and had a battle fleet of war ships. Oh the things I would do to my enemies. How I would make them suffer before tossing them out of an airlock into the empty coldness of space. The thought of conquering planets and colonizing the known galaxy began to sooth me. My depression began to lift, and the feeling of eagerness to do something creative began to burn within me. So I existed out of the game set up screen and shut down Space Empires and then opened up my mod folder. I knew what I wanted to, and I set to doing it. I love many things about this game; the fact that even if your board stiff with it, after a few hours you cannot wait to play it.

In fact, the one thing I have to say that I really enjoy about Space Empires IV is the moddability of the game. I mean it was pure genus to make a game with the modding community in mind. Aaron Hall’s foresight in this matter clearly cannot be questioned. To think that a game like Space Empires IV has endured strongly now for four years in the light of such monsterly anticipated games like Masters Of Orion 3, and Galactic Civilizations is a true testament to Aaron’s brilliance.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am not merely sucking up to Aaron on the slim hopes of getting into the Space Empires V beta, I am also doing it because it is true. Look at how much money was dumped into making Masters Of Orion 3 and how many man-hours had been invested in that game. A game that was so horrible that it earned the not so honorable awards for “WTF Where They Thinking,” and “POS Game Of the Decade.”

Space Empires IV is by no means a mainstream game. When it was released in November 2000, it was laughed at as being to DOS like, but despite this it earned very favorable reviews by many game sites including PC Gamer Magazine.

When Space Empires IV Gold was released many people felt they were given the shaft and refused to buy the new version. Those of us who knew better jumped on the chance to buy the Gold edition, much like we would for any expansion pack. It was money well spent and if factored out, the $90.00 dollars I spent on the game divided by the amount of time I have spent playing it over the years would equal .00000023 cents per hour of play. That is a bargain of epic proportions no matter how you cut it.

With the release of the Gold Edition of Space Empires IV, there was surge in the number of mods, ship sets, and add-ons for the game. During this time such mods as the updated TDM, Devullan, and Proportions were released to mention a few. The TDM mod was, and is, by far the best AI mod for the game.

Many people went to great lengths to tweak the AI’s for each of the stock races in order to make them more human like in the decision and game play process. To many the mod was a Godsend as the stock AI sucked horribly after the first few games. The TDM mod set the standard for all of the mods to follow. It did not make any game play changes; it merely enhanced the existing AI settings to improve the overall single player stock gaming experience.

I forget what TDM stands for, but it was a co-op made mod involving Tampa Gamer, Mephisto, and many others. In retrospect, I would have to say that the TDM mod, although not reviewed here, really set the standard that is now the minimum for any mod.

Of all the mods currently available for Space Empires IV, I would have to say that the Adamant Mod is by far the most involved mod to date. The mods creator, Imperator Fyron, has literally spent years developing this hybrid mod of Dungeon and Dragons meets and marries 4x Space Conquest. The mod is so massive in its scope that to even attempt to review it would take many weeks of game play and a severe bout of “one more turn” syndrome to even come close to understanding the depth of this mod.

The best way to sum up the Adamant mod would be to say simply, play it for your self and be amazed. I have yet to play more than a few hours of the Adamant mod before falling back into my own little world and abandoning my game to go mod the STM. I am weak in this regard since I lost all interest in the game, say for ship set making, and to some minor degree modding the STM.

I do regret not having the interest to play a solid long-term game of Adamant, as it is one of the most encompassing mods for Space Empires IV. In fact, the depth of the Adamant mod is so great that I theorize that if one started to play Adamant mod, they would loose themselves in its tangled web of role-playing and fantasy. Ok a bit silly to say that, but truth be told, the mod is truly a monumental achievement.

Granted I have not played it in any great depth in some time, and have missed out on a mind-boggling array of new features and changes, but I do realize that greatness of the mod.

The tell tail signs of a great mod, like the TDM, Pirates, Devullan, Proportions, Adamant, and a few others is that they are all unique to each other and provide the player with options that they would not otherwise have. From simple AI improvement to long term RPG type game play no one can argue that the mods for Space Empires IV are nothing if not shier brilliance.

Again this simply goes back to the root, to the vision Aaron had and made a reality. Without his innovation and attention to fan desires, we would simply have just another game that we would play for a month or two then toss into the yard sale bin. Of all the games that I have had the pleasure to play, Space Empires IV has to be the best. Unquestionably it is the one game that has given me more than I have given for it, and that is above all else what is important in ones fantasy life, to get more than you pay for, and to really enjoy it.

I do not see the appeal many of you have with post counts. They are really meaningless if you think about them.

Says the man with over ten thousand posts... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

And just skimming through that mod review... AT, I think you only have about 10% of that actually talking about the mod you're reviewing (Adamant). The rest of it is a very glowing review of SEIV. Might want to edit a bit, and keep that one filed away for any random place that wants a game review, and think about starting over on reviewing Adamant http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Any trailers out? That is any where you can see the trailer without having to buy your way into a fan club?

Its just a rambling post. I typed that up in about 10 minutes a while back just to see what came out. I was going to review a mod, any mod, but discovered that I really just didn't have the time or interest in doing so. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif In order to review a mod, one must know the mod. To know a mod is to play a mod and well I just didn't have the interest in playing any SEIV at that time. Sure I could have reviewed the STM, but that would be baise and such. Besides I hate the STM and would right a horrible review of it.
